Live Vs. CD Release Mixes
What do you prefer?
Live Mixes - like Essential Mixes, where the mixing is slightly off, EQs aren't perfect, maybe some volume issues, and you can hear the crowd -or- CD Releases - like Global Underground, where mixes are digitally mastered and flawless in every way. |

I'm not too sure about live mixes (that is, live at a party/club/concert). They tend to fall into the same trap that live rock albums fall into: something is lost when you end up listening to it a home. The energy and spontanaity that occurs at parties very rarely translates over in just the audio department. You kind of need that visual stimuli to complement it (which is why party vids work much better, imo). Sure, there are standouts here and there; there are always standouts. But in my experience, they aren't the typical case.
Live, as in a radio broadcast or sessions in the studio, are a different matter, though. A DJ has a chance to really play around with his aresenal without fear of clearing the dancefloor if their experimenting doesn't click with the audience. It's more of a representation of the DJ themselves rather than catering to the customers in front of them. |

live is where it is at.
if you want to hear a dj it has to be live. otherwise are you listening to a dj, or a producer, programmer... I dunno for me it is a total exchange of energy, 2 way. dj-dancer and dancer to dj. if there are 4000 dancing or 20, there is still an exchange. playing at home or on the radio you do not get that 2 way exchange. kinda like the diff between sex and wanking off. as per the perfection question... if a mix is perfect, the dj is not pushing them self. I like to see a dj fly on the edge, get excited with the crowd. risk = reward. I rate a dj like they rate gymnastics. a) how hard is the attempt b) how flawless was the execution? is the set flawless but the difficulty level is = to doing somersaults back and fourth... or are there mistakes here and there that DO NOT interrupt the flow, yet the difficulty level is like the gymnasts that are flipping around twisting, pushing their body to the max, and sometimes the landing has a little bounce to it. even if the later messes up once in a while I would like to see that more then day after day of perfect somersaults. --------------------------------------------------- http://mysmirnoff.ca/en/vw_jump.php?djc=DJ676 |
