What it means is that I honestly think this song is worth about 4 songs really. I heard Girls for the first time when someone posted it on here a couple months before this album came out. Frankly, I could have done well without it. But come on. There's three tracks on there I actually outright despise, just because they seem to have no musical or danceable use whatsoever...
It seems Howlett's been pushed into a "style" or something like that. If there's anything this album is it's characteristic. It's too bad though because it's missing a lot of the energy and fun that they had back in the rave/techno days. Gone are the fast upbeat basslines with funky voice samples and they seem thoroughly replaced with overly distorted basslines that attempt to make up for what they lack in musical enjoyment in an attempt to create funk or something like that... sadly it comes up... lacking?
I'll write more in a bit.... but yeah. Nowhere near the caliber of anything else they've done in the past. Even Fat of the Land managed to garner a couple of 5-star tracks. But nothing hear that outright grabbed me. I really had to put in the effort to try and enjoy these songs.
Oh well. At least Chemical Brothers are still producing really killer tracks, so it's not that Big Beat has died out...
