Why so much mention of Aenima? Undertow > j00.
And 13th Step? I like it and everything, but if you want to hear some real nice rock, check out Failure's Fantastic Planet, with the original version (far superior to the original, IMHO) of The Nurse Who Loved Me.
I like Maynard's version... but it's just not as good.
Right now I'm really digging Franz Ferdinand though. 3 months after discovering them I'm still adoring this CD.
Anyways, on with the list....
Prodigy - Music For The Jilted Generation
Their best album. Almost undeniably. For the Nintendo Generation, the Hackers Soundtrack almost drove us directly to the music store so we could grab this one.
Underworld - Everything Everything
I dig the studio versions of Cowgirl and Cups a lot, right? But they compare nothing to the live versions of these songs.... The first song I've never heard the original of.... but it's Godly.
Primus - Rhionplasty and Antipop
I can't pick my favourite Primus album so I'll just pick two. A long time ago, before I really got much into Primus, my friend was trying to convince me of their greatness. I admitted Claypool's command of the bass, but never really got that much into the rest of the sound. Then I heard the live version of Tommy The Cat. His line was that the rest of the band had just as much power over their respective instruments as Claypool did over the bass, and if you don't agree, then you need to hear this song. Also check out The Thing That Should Not Be. Better than the Metallica original. Not bad, considering Primus is a 3-piece band and Metallica is 5.
Antipop, on the other hand, has got to have the best energy I've ever heard on a Rock album. No pretention, no angst or whining.... just pure unbridled rocking.
Pet Shop Boys - Very
Their best album, and the first person to say that "That's just because of Go West" gets a boot to the fucking head. While it's catchy and fun, the pop hit suffers the same fate as Daft Punk's One More Time: While I love it, it's by far the weakest song on the whole album.
which of course brings us to...
Daft Punk - Discovery
My favourite song is Superheroes. If you haven't heard this album in its entirety yet, get your ass to the nearest video store and rent Interstellar 5555.
Like, now.
And for the Tranceheads out there.... I've always believed if you truly want to understand an artistic movement, you've got to go straight to the source. Again, anybody who is saying "Ahh, Tranceport" right now gets a boot to the head.
Jam & Spoon - Trip-o-matic Fairy Tales 2001
Listen to Odyssey to Anoonya while doing anything and learn why they call it "Trance".
