hehe... i know the one like mofo x will be all up in this thread
I had the pleasure of seeing Bungle live @ the Commo back around '96... still to this day one of the most intense live acts i've witnessed. and there's been lots. i've had mixed feelings about their recorded material, but you can't deny the genius of it... Patton's solo work that i've heard hasn't been my thing, too masturbatory. and of the other projects only Lovage has really turned my crank... (haven't heard Tomahawk) but whatever you think of him, he's definitely in a class of his own as a vocalist & an avant garde musician. for the uninitiated, i'd definitely reccommend checking out Bungle & Lovage.... |

Keep your eyes open for Peeping Tom - Mike Patton's solo project produced by Dan The Automator. It was annouced to be ready in 2003, but has been delayed til sometime this year.
It's a shame that Mr. Bungle broke up due to ego clashes between Mike Patton and Trey Sprunance (guitarist/songwriter for bungle). Both were essential in creating the Mr. Bungle sound and both are musical geniuses in my mind. I'd recommend checking out some Secret Chiefs 3 if you like Bungle. It's Trey Sprunance's band with Trevor Roy Dunn (bungle bassist) and Danny Heifetz (bungle drummer) and it's definitely got that schizoid, frenetic sound of bungle coupled with insane production techniques, and virtuosic instrmuent mastery. Also seems to have a strong middle-eastern flavour to it along with other obtuse styles like surf-rock, IDM blip-core, drum n bass, and electro. Other recommendation for the drop-on-a-dime genre changes and multiple-personality-disorder type tunes if Estradasphere. Although not as harsh or heavy as Bungle or even quite as esoteric as Secret Chiefs 3, they are nonetheless phenonmenal musicians with a more of jazz influence and capable of crazy, tight and frantic shifts in styles and genres while maintaining a cohesive whole to the song. They also have a reputation of doing crazy videogame theme covers during their live acts. Check this out: http://www.ocremix.org/detailmix.php?mixid=OCR00577 it's their cover of the Super Mario Bros 2 theme song. Absolutlely amazing. I still think that Tomohawk sucks though... |
