Music Collecting

How do you guys collect your tunes? MP3? Compact Disc? Vinyl? 8-track???

Over the past couple of weeks i've gotten into this thing where I want to start a CD collection. I used to have one before the arrival of MP3's, then CD's phased out because they're too expensive. I collected like, a bajillion mp3's and was super proud of my collection. That is until a virus ravaged my computer and i lost all of my music.

ouch.

Now I collect records, and JUST got started back into CD's. I love see'ing a well made collection of anything. and i think EVERYONE should start listening to music on vinyl. Just to be fashionable. lol, I dunno. What kinda music do you guys collect? and on what medium do you listen to it on?

I collect MP3's mostly... I'm slowly picking up Vinyl as well.

As for genres of MP3's, it's rather eclectic. With the Vinyl, it's mostly Drum'n'Bass.

My buddy's grandma has like 10 times the number of vinyl than i have. and it looks PIMP. A entire shelf, from side to side and 3 rows tall full of oldschool records that i've never ever heard of. She's even got a Ray Charles and Chuck Berry section. It's sick.

I got some Ray and Chuck on 8-track too. but it'd be a miracle if they still worked. The car with the 8-track player doesn't even work anymore =/

A collection of music on any format is a beautiful thing... Until you start running out of space to put it all.

MP3s only!

If I buy a cd, first thing to do is rip it on my pc!

(and then share it on dc++ and slsk, mwhuaha!) :)

Everything's sorted in 13 cryptic folders...
...traditional genre tags never worked for me, so I tag my genres my own way!

...and then it goes like "genre" - artist - album:

My collection is rather small, about 1979 tracks, 190 albums...but I know *all* of them.

Am I a collecter? Yes, kind of, but size never impressed me. I could easily have 1 TB of MP3s by tomorrow, but what's the point if you don't know your stuff? Erm, no thx.

All files are tagged 100% and bitrates are at least 128kbps (preferably higher!) and every folder has a cover (300x300) as well as a little album review in a *.txt.

Music was my first love...all this powered by last.fm and Amarok and hell yeah, it makes me orgasm every day!! <3

Everything that appeals to me.

It's mostly trip-hop, ethereal, world/ethnic, shoegazer, industrial, ebm, d'n'b and the angelic voices stuff...but limiting yourself to some genres is the worst thing you can do...it's like eating the same meal every day...so try it all, if you dig deep enough you'll find sth awesome in (almost?) every style of music! :)

I actually dont download any music, really. I have no music downloading program on my computer. I take what mp3's and burnt CD's people pass off to me, but I mostly buy all my music in the store.

CD collector through and through.

MP3s... pft. Did the initial 'download-a-bunch' thing when I could on AudioGalaxy, but got bored of it. There's just no value in an MP3. It amazes me anyone would actually pay for something that has no re-sale worth (you can always pawn a CD for a buck or two) and is uninsurable.

When you start to collect something, you kind of need that tangible quality to it to make it personable. It's a human thing I guess.

As for vinyl... well, I know if I ever started collecting that, I'd be way worse than I am with CDs. It's garnered its reputation as 'black crack' for a reason. ;)

Wow, polar opposites. I see no inherant value in a bit of plastic that's just going to get scratched, lost or stolen anyway. I'll happily buy music I like, but the first thing I do is rip it at high quality and store it on my RAID array and burn it to a backup DVD. With storage getting so cheap these days, I don't see any reason to ever delete music I like again.

I've purchased hundreds of CDs over the years, but if you actually look at my "CD collection", there's only a few commercial CDs in there, and those were all given to me by the artists. The rest is all peoples' demos, mix CDs, etc.

If I'm listening to music, unless it's in a car (rental, I don't own one), it's pretty much guaranteed to be an MP3.
