Whats with this??
OK...... I have been into breaks for less than 2 years now so I definately am not greatly knowleged on the genre but whats with the new Florida breaks comming out? Its all shit!! It seems like when I bought my first dj czech cd or even Bdub tape, those breaks are wayy better than what is being released today.
What the hell is going on here? The new breaks comming out of Florida are wack!! So wack that even Tony Faline has done a remix of that "Pink" track?? WTF?????? This is killing me! Is this just a lack of creativity? Is this just a sellout to make cash on thier behalf? I thought Electronic music was supposed to be underground? Doing remakes of radio tracks seems to be a new trend here. I know Dj Icey is doing some new shit cause he is deffinately getting darker with nutso basslines. I like it cause its always something new. Faline, HudaHudia, Spice, BradSmith, Trashy, X are all brining out shit thats making the florida sound, sound bad... Fuck most of it is not even music, just shit over a beat. I spin breaks and am getting sick of hearing the same track again and again at bassix, ff, boomtown Hipnotic every single week!! This post is going nowhere so ill end it here. I just had to get some steam outta my head.... BTW- I got about 200 old florida tracks for sale that I will be posting up with all the names and artists if anyone is interested in buying. Hit me up once the list is in. |

I know exactly where you are coming from bro, but these artists that you are talking about have been at this for years, it's pretty much just evolution of their styles. Tony left cut-n-paste for hard and deep, but he still plays the fuckin funk. Huda always rocks it as well! I just think that he has been giving his artists too much creative license over what sound they put out on his labels. They put out solid tracks, but the flow isn't as "there" as it was (I own Uniscope 1-10 and like 20 Kaleidoscope trackz but haven't bought any lately). DJ Fixx, until recently, was my favorite producer and I really do think that the man is amazing, but I'm not about to alter my sound just because he changed his. DJ X's last "enjoyable" track (by me) was "Make the Girls Dance", and that came out like 2 years ago, but Malicious Mike just came up with "Old-Schoolin" and that was pretty ill. Brad Smith has done alot of sick ass shit in the past, but now he and Ill-Versed seem to have parted ways, so there goes everything that was phat on Crescent. However, they have both came out with some very solid bootlegs since. And their parting brings me to the Decepticonz. These guys did some of the illest tracks ever, and then they broke up. Like that, BOOM! WTF? So they both go almost solo. They've both only "done it" once for me since.
And that there brings me to the end of my pointless rant. They are all great artists, but where the fuck is the funk? P.S. The Pink remix you speak of is actually Huda Hudia (I heard him play the white label and he told me all about it...) p.p.s. I like that Pink track, until it gets that breakdown synth going... Maybe i'm just cheesy. BUT I'M COMIN' UP, SO YOU BETTER GET THIS PARTY STARTED! |

It's called breaks are getting really really trendy now, and everyone seems to think that DJs will buy any old crappy breaks records, just because they're really huge right now.
Personally, I'm sick of breakbeats. well, most of the newer stuff at least. I'd like to hear some oldschool stuff, and more natural, funky, hiphop influenced breaks. None of this tweaky soulless rave shite any more. Tweaky soulless rave shite is cool if it's really FAST. (ie Dnb) but that's about all. If it's slow, it should have some soul to it. |

Im not to surprised. Like what rytalin said how breaks are getting more mainstream/trendy. So a remix from a pop hit by pick, is sad yet understandable. Alsow it could be the DJ's egos hitting them aswell, notice too meny artist who make it realy big tend to get lazy... or start to forget "its about the music"
thats why you work realy hard and try to improve what they do some day ;) |

breakz
I know exactly where you are coming from bro, but these artists that you are talking about have been at this for years, it's pretty much just evolution of their styles.
The thing is, there isnt much change going on in their styles.. Thats why its getting boring listening to thier next tracks, cause you know that theres nothing new. Huda always rocks it as well! I was real disappointed when i saw this guy play. When I saw him play at Riverside, he ended up playing half a hard house set?? WTF?? Even Played Sandstorm (the regular remix) WEAK!! DJ Fixx, until recently, was my favorite producer and I really do think that the man is amazing, but I'm not about to alter my sound just because he changed his. I own every single one of his tracks back to when he had his own label out "Fixxt records" My first one da funk in da trunk EP" Even got it signed. I used to love all his shit he came out with but I couldnt really give 2 poos for his newer stuff. What up with his new one Edit EP?? DJ X's last "enjoyable" track (by me) was "Make the Girls Dance No way!! His last one was way back called "Why you bumpin?" Brad Smith has done alot of sick ass shit in the past, but now he and Ill-Versed seem to have parted ways, YA but now hes sold out and put out all those MR> Smith tracks which is causing a lot of shit out in Florida. People dont like what he did. IF you listen to where the Uk sound is going, it keeps progressin. Thats why most cant even dig it cause its way out there, To far advanced to even understand. Listen to some older Plump Djs, Now listen to some of thier newer stuff. Bigg difference. I am totally diggin the old school sound which I am trying to obtian. Its hard to get those roudy, hard, funky, swingy, raw beats. Thats what breaks is. I was at Pulsate in November when DJ Fixx was playing in the main room. DJ CZECH brought was playing in the 2nd room at the same time and brought out an old school set with NO flodia at all. I swear by the end of thier sets Czech had all the real beat heads bustin loose and freakin out while Fixx had the kids who where new to the music or didnt even know about breaks listening to him. Czech is a breaks god!! If you wanna know whats in, listen to this guy. |

I'm not an avid follower of breaks, the only kind I ever really buy are "nu-skool" type breaks that work well with trance (PMT, Hybrid, Way Out West, etc). However, I must agree with you about Czech, that man is awesome. I used to see him at Sonar pretty much every Friday night -- both me and most of my friends were very disappointed when that night was changed.

My concept on the cheese factor:
If it's soooo bad that it's good, let the good times roll! (Prefect example would be the cover of 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' by none other then William Shatner. PURE FUCKIN' GOLD! GO D/L of Kazaa or Morphuis RIGHT NOW for a good laugh). If it makes people shake their butt then it's all good. markpaul :384: |

You've got some good points,
I have no idea why huda plays only "k" trax, it does get old when you own them all (and the hard house isn't as effective as it should be) Why you bumpin was definately a great track, but i was saying that I don't like much of anything that is coming out on xquizit now (make the girls dance came out 2 years ago). You are right about alot of mr smith tracks, but Music is a very strong remix of Madonna, and that's what I was talking about. (that and the Ill-versed number 1 on so-sue-me) Now about fixx, all I have to say is that I wont touch the edit. And the last thing I heard by the plumps (minus the remix of deejay punk rock "Blow my Mind") was pretty electro. Czech is great, good times and great selection, however, I own almost every track on "Breakin Beats in All Directions" and 80 percent of it is Florida. Yes, it is old, but he put it out 3 years ago, when his rep was up there for bringin the funk. If what you like is the BigBeat Freestyle sound, (ie track one - Front to the back on caged records, which IS the sound he's accredited with) it's ALMOST missing. He plays Volume's "Ride the Funk", DJ Love's "Contact" and Huda and Volume's "C'mon Breakdown", all very synth-y Florida breakz. Now I admit, this was just one CD, but I remember his tapes from 1996 and they were mixed better and had sicker trax on them. And he still had Body Rock and Breakdown on 'em (classic Florida breakz). Raw Funky Breakz is all that matters, you just have to find them. I suggest watching Breaklogix (even though you don't like brad Smith and Spice and they own it, they might be able to suprise us, they are @ 50% right now.) and lp's from the the whole south of the US (Texas especially, breakz are abundant there, yet not respected). Not every good artist can afford to put out their trax themselves, so check out a few commercial compilations. Check out Versatile and Alias on 315, they do bootlegs, but they also do great originals. Alot of promising talent has broken up lately and that pisses me off, because you know that it's all about their egos, and that's a sad, sad day. If you don't want to waste your time @ the record stores, check out http://www.funkwax.com, then at least you can stream the crap (and sometimes un-crap) from the comfortability of your own home... AND THEY ARE THE BEST ONLINE! Last edited by jmzD; Jan 21, 02 at 10:28 PM. |

Flrodia cheese or no cheese
Yeah the way Flordia has been producing breaks is weak.
Its the same crap over and over now. Old flordia is great, but the new shit aint even funk, its the same drums, the same basslines with hurtin vocals and hurtin fills. Although I do think Fixx is still great his new LP "4 more 4 tha floor" was awsome four tracks, all pretty good, but 1st track on the A side "R u Ready" is spectacular. Im gone from the flordia break scene, STRICTLY Nu-Breaks & 2-step (oh got to love the 2step)! |

i've never really been into breaks cuz alot of the breaks i hear at parties are repetitive and boring..... sounds like simply a bassline over a beat. there are some dope breaks out there but not enough to make me wanna play breaks....
hehe maybe its time for you to change to another genre! yur a dope dj with alotta skillz so if theres another genre yur all over then do that! or get into production and show those florida people what kinda breaks is real breaks. werd |

I went to Lime at it's last night over at WetBar and I thought his set was -FAR- better than the "big guestheadliner" Donald Glaude Dont get me wrong....Glaude's set was really good but Czech set had that whole place going insane! He really knows how to make people get out of their seats and dance |

i totally know what you mean! like, i spin uk hard house and i've just been finding that all the best artists and labels have just been like putting out total cheese lately. i mean, i know i used to always count on labels like tidy trax and nukleuz to put out the good shit, but lately it seems as if they've just been rehashing the same old ideas, you know? it's just like the soul isn't there anymore, you know? i guess it must be the same thing with florida breakz too.
