help with cubase sx 2

I recently installed cubase sx 2, and i'm having problem recording midi performances into audio files. When I turn on the record option for the audio track, and then the record button on the sequencer, no info is recorded into the audio track.

Also I was wondering that for the input bus for my audio track, Stereo In is the only option available in the dropdown menu. Also Stereo Out L R are the only options for the output bus. Is this normal?

I'm running AMD XP2000+ on windows Xp. My soundcard is M-Audio Audiophile 2496.

I'm new at this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Kevin

You can't record a MIDI performance into an audio file. You need to create a MIDI track to record MIDI data, and then have that track set to record and it must be selected [at least in default mode, as far as I know]. The correct MIDI input must also be selected from the channel pop-up/strip.

Since the 24/96 is a 2-in, 2-out card that would be normal, although there might be an ASIO driver for it that lets you split the I/P and O/P into 2 mono channels each, instead of linked stereo pairs.

hi thnx for the help, but i'm not sure if you understood what i'm saying. Since my cpu only handle so much vst instruments, I'd need to record my midi track into an audio track. For example, say I programmed (or recorded) a midi sequence with a synth as ouput ( minimoog or whatever ). So how do I turn this (or record ) into an audio file? So instead of having the vst instrument playing the midi sequence each time, I'd just have the audio version of this sequence.

If you want to record a VST instrument, make an audio track and set the VST input's output to the tracks input, if it's an external instrument just play back the MIDI and record the audio from out of the instrument through the soundcard's input.

ya that's my problem, under my input drop-down menu for my audio track, there is only Stereo In. So I can't choose any vst instrument's output there.

1: open a new audio track and output the synth to the new input, record.

2: I haven't used Cubase in a bit, but you can also export the Midi file as an audio file and it will create a new audio channel in the project, if you select that. Select the channel (solo it) then I think it's "file", "export as audio" and it will convert it.

Something like that, I've been using Protools lately, so I maybe confused. Let me know if you're still stuck and I'll fire up Cubase and get you another answer.

like was said above, solo your midi channel with the performance you want selected with the locators, go to file -> export and then choose for it to be exported into the pool and and audio channel in your project. voila =)

File ---> Export ---> Audio Mixdown... to be exact. export the midi file and import it back into the pool as a chunk of audio. or you can use the Freeze function which will "freeze" the midi exactly where it is... let me go home and actually walk myself through it and I"ll get back to you, it saves processing power

Re: your buses, those are the default ones. If you want to create more inputs and outputs, you have to go into Devices... VST Connections.. (I think, I'm not in front of my computer right now) and you can create Ins and Outs.

Hey guys, I think there is something wrong with my cubase. Although the export audio mixdown is a method that works. What I want is actually record through the buses. Even when I have a vst instrument open in cubase. In my audio track, for the input drop down menu, it's still just my Stereo In's there, and the instrument does not show up there as one of the options. Therefore there is no way for me to select the instrument as an input.
What I want is to have 2 Audio tracks recording each vst instrument, so 1 just for the dry signal. And the other one recording the send effects.
