Drum n Bass Question..

So listening to a couple of 05 best of british sets..

If there's a big show, with say 8-10 djs, (eg, best of british) do you hear the same tracks over and over again.. because ofcourse it's all about the new shit right? the promos? so if you got 8 djs, wouldn't they be playing the same promos?

Gone through a J magik set & a mampi swift set so far and have heard a couple of the same tracks...

What happened to finding tracks that no one esle had! That was the shit when you used to drop a track that had never been heard and see all the chumps come up to the decks looking at the label? REMEMBER HIDING THE FUCKING LABEL? What happened to that?

Well it's not the producers at all actually, because the producers are coming out with absolutly amazing shit in the past couple of years. It's every big dj who gets the same promo and plays it at show where everyone else plays the same promo. That's lazy.

Anyone else have some insight?

yeah thats been going on since i first got into dnb.... seems like they just show up for their set and totally ignore the set before them. they probably have no idea wtf all the other dudes dropped that night and just drop out their favorites... why should they compromise cuz someone played those tracks first.

besides it would be nice if those producer dj types played more personal remixes, unrealeased dancesmashers etc . andy c is definetly by far the best drumnbass dj when it comes to originality and skill on the decks. seems like hes also more upfront with hot new shit. dsl is also completely on a league of his own as well. i havent been feeling the dungeon beats hes been doing but i'll always have mad love for that dude.... 2000-2003 was just full out sick for dsl

Absolutly, these dudes need to listen to the sets that have been played! They;re getting paid big time cash for playing other peoples music, but they all play the same tracks! I wish there was a common thing where, if i'm pendulum, I can play all my original productions, and not worry about those tracks being played 7 times before, especially at one of those big d&b shows. You simply don't see that happening in other genres and it's going to make this sound old and dated very quickly. So I say, play those crazy one in 100 white label remixes, play your orig shit straight off cd if you have to, just don't play the same shit everyone else plays (i'm talking about if you play a big show with 10 other d&b dj's) Sure throw in the odd big tune, but LISTEN to whats been played 6 times before and don't play it!! Pretty simple!

The same tunes geting played over and over has always been the way at big dnb events over here. I was at a festival a few years back when the remix of champion sound was the tune of the monent and just about every dj started and ended the set with it (Yawwn). Andy C started his set with it and then rewound it!!! his first tune!!! , gets a bit annoying after a while.

yup, it's called cock-rock syndrome. all the guys try and be cool and play those "oh-so-hard-to-get" tunes. i used to attend the Ultraworld parties in DC which had all-star lineups.. I remember one party the second room lineup was Hype, J-Majik, Adam F, Doc Scott, Jumping Jack Frost, Ray Keith, Marcus Intalex, Fierce and Randall.. or something like that. Same thing you described.. it was almost like listening to Z95 or something, the same tuness every hour or two, unbelievable!!

I actually got fed up at the last WMC in Miami I went to as well, Dillinja's "Twist Em Out" was the hot dubplate of the week. Can you imagine hearing those stabs OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. I think I had nightmares about it. I thought it was aight the first twenty-five times I heard it but come on.

I'm all for playing a mix of your own tunes, unreleased tunes, older tunes that haven't been played in awhile, rare classics... it went downhill when DJing became a celebrity-status thing.

DnB has been like this for years. Andy C does it too, so don't put him up on a pedestal. When a big tune is in circulation every big Uk DJ canes it to death. It's always been a complaint of mine about UK DNB Djs, too much emphasis is put on playing the latest, hottest tracks as opposed to DJing skills and originality.

Just a note on covering or hiding the record label. Unless it is a track you made personally, you don't have the right to cover up the info on someone else's tune. Most producers are trying to make it in this bizz and hiding the info so no one knows what it is is disrespectful and selfish. You wanna play ish that no one else is playing, dig deeper and work on developing your own style.

PS:

Yo Illy, some those Ultraworld parties were pretty nutso huh? My first really big massives were Ultraworlds. Ahh, memories.

I just hate it when the sick tracks Andy is playing (being released on RAM) isn't out for like a fuckin' year...and it's totally old to me when it finally being realeased....example...Jazz Freak - Shimon, I finally got it last Friday on Promo...but it already seems old to me....kinda sucks.

Yeah this is also a big problem thats always been in the dnb scene, but if you dont want to be playing old tunes by the time they come out do some diggin there are so many killer dnb tracks that just slip thru the cracks cause one of the big names didnt write it or is playing it to death , trust me.

sorry dude ,wasnt suggesting you was one of thoughts cats that buys every big tune regardless of weather its good or not as long as its been cut that day.

im just saying you dont need to be droping all the big tunes in order for your set to be badass as i said i notice lots of dnb tune appear on promo and that will be all you hear from that artist even tho the tune is sick.

lots of kidz making tunes in there bedrooms ,some might just scrape enuff cash to get some TPs cut and sent out but if they dont get signed right away it can be disheartening for them to do it again. just my opinion :)

I would love to produce, got great ideas...but when it comes to learning to use the hardware / software...I just have no patience right now...it's just hard to produce and Dj very well at the same time...it's either one at a time right now...doing both very well would require no sleep! haha.

tell me about it ! i love to write beats but have no patience what so ever when is comes to structure and composition of a tune. its so easy to get distracted and just put the dex on ,used to get my wife to hide my carts when i was writing but id usual find em again or just get pissed off and have no outlet for it. trying to be a bit more strict with myself when it comes to production these days.

But Jay, how many years have you been collecting Vinyl? I've only been buying vinyl for about a year...You've prolly been spinning for like 7-8 years....When Auto played that "7 record of like some Toni Braxton reggae, dub remix at the end of Zinc's set was kinda wack...but funny...haha

I think production comes after mastering Dj'ing first...once I've completely have polished my skills then I would consider production....I just think it's the wackest thing when huge, established producers are only half ass Dj's,its sad to me..like Ed Rush & Optical's lastest CD "Out The Box" or something...fuck...there are alot of just weak cuts on there....almost embarrassing for a A-lister DJ...

OK i agree with you that there are Big producers that get dj gigs but aint very good , its easy pocket money i guess. But mastering djing b4 you try production c'mon ,at what point do you say "thats me masted djing im moving to production" ,as a dj or producer you are constantly learning and constantly geting better ,theres no target level ,just keep building skillz.

and to my knowledge ed rush & optical started out as dj's. Ok optical is a fair dj ,not heard him do anything spectacular but ed rush can fucking rinse it!!
