Reid Speed - DNB/Breaks/2step Pioneer
Since you guys seemed to like the last music I linked you guys to, I thought I'd introduce you to someone else I know who hasn't quite broken through here, but has taken the rest of the world by storm. Let me know if any of you would be interested in seeing her play. =) Enjoy!
Here's some music Spontaneous Combustion Breaks Mix September 2004 Jump-Up DNB Mix Need 4 Speed 2-Step Mix Reid Speed was introduced to the world of electronic music at age 15 in 1994. She was at a rave in Colorado when DJ Dan took the decks and turned her world upside-down. At that moment she knew it was her destiny to move people through dance music. Fast forward two years and the then senior in high school had a pair of decks and a love of drum & bass. In February 1997 she got her break when she was asked to become a rotating resident of 50/50 Productions weekly party Camouflage. From there she caught the eyes & ears of NYC's largest rave production crew, Stuck on Earth, who invited her to join just in time for Boo 2, the second of their now legendary annual pre-halloween events. She gained a lot of exposure through these & other massive NYC events and before long was touring the country as well as maintaining a growing fan base in NYC. In Sept 1998 NYC finally got a Saturday night Drum & Bass party... with Reid as one of the resident DJs. Direct Drive is still the premier drum & bass weekly and has expanded to include big one-off events and regularly hosts UK & international talent. Reid has played alongside every respected drum & bass producer from Aphrodite to Zinc in NYC and cities all over the U.S. as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, and Ireland. Reid's love of jungle led her to England in the summer of 1997. It was there she discovered Speed Garage, which at the time was just replacing Drum & Bass as the staple of UK mainstream radio. She began her collection there and immediately began championing it wherever she could in the U.S. In April 1998 she started working at Breakbeat Science, NYC's first all drum & bass store. Soon the store expanded to include the sound which has come to replace speed garage... 2 step, as it is sometimes called, and a range of other breakbeat sounds. As one of the first U.S. supporters of 2 step she appeared with and played for author/journalist Simon Reynolds on a special 1998 episode of Velocity, BBS's internet drum & bass show discussing the possibilities of this taking hold in the U.S. By 2000, New York was ready and Reid collaborated with 4.0 Marketing as NYC 2 Step , and with dj support from DB threw NYC's first 2 step party. She is no doubt partially responsible for this growth of a new scene here within the U.S. In addition to her full DJ schedule, Reid has also found time to begin producing, collaborating with FS (of Ming & FS) and Datcyde on tracks released last year. She served as the RPM director of her college radio station for a year, and in 2002 was added as one of Mixer magazine's drum & bass / 2 step/ breaks reviewers. She was featured on Showtime's Shonext channel where she co-produced the track for her segment. Her mixtapes have been available since 1997, have covered many genres, and helped solidify her reputation as one of New York's finest Djs. She has been featured in many industry & other magazines since 1998, including Urb, Mixer, Women's Wear Daily, Time Out NY, Flyer's "Best of 2000" issue & the Fader's recent "Best of New York" issue. She has since released 2 internationally acclaimed mixes on Breakbeat Science: "Resonance" and "Life After Dark", was recently featured as resident DJ for the WB's "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment" and continues to tour all over the world. Currently she is living in LA. Click here for her website. |

I love the 2step one. Not many DJs that can skilfully play a variety of genres like she has.
She has been nothing but a great friend, a mentor and an inspiration to me. Little delicate girl with big bad personality. One of the first few times I went out to New York, I handed out my mix CDs hoping to get booked, and she stole one off of my friend's desk at the Breakbeat Science headquarters. She came up to me and demanded to know if it was ProTooled. "It sounds like it!" she frowned at me. I swore up and down to her that it wasn't. Some people backed me up, and she gave me an approving nod. "Good mixing." She's done nothing but be a great help and support ever since. With that in mind... you may see her here in the near future... =) |
