Get techs for sure, i like the shure 44-7's for carts because they track really good and you can scratch with them. That leaves you with like 2k to spend on a dope mixer. Check out Pioneer DJM600, A&H xone 92, or Ecler Nuo5. Nuo 5 being the cheaper out of the bunch. It'll leave you some extra cash to buy records and its an awesome mixer.

buy used technics for sure
no need to buy new, its a waste of money. get the shure scratch carts as well. that should leave your with about 2250 left. a good mixer is essential. something the effects and a crossfader curve will do well. depends if you want to scratch or not maybe buy something to record your mixes with to see if you're getting better or not. a 100 dollar mini disc will do fine. |

I say buy a set of used technics 1200 tables for around $1000. Then buy some Ortofon Concord Needles and your left with pretty much enough money to buy you any mixer on the market. I would get a Pioneer 909 but I dont think you would need such a thing starting out. You need a mixer to learn with thats pretty basic but will last and is good quality. Ive got a Vestax 05 pro that Ive had since 97 and its still works perfectly!
Akeel can hook up Ecler mixers and he has a battle mixer that is incredible! I dont know the model of it but that would sure be a great platform to start off with!!! Akeel where you at? |

I'd go for
Tech 12's - Pioneer DJM 500 or 600 or Pioneer CDJ1000's plus a 600 That will most likely be a bit more than $3500. But its well worth it The only problem with final scratch is.. What're you going to do when you get booked to use final scratch? bring your entire computer setup w/monitor and all that fun stuff? you'll need a good computer to run it. That'll eat up half of your $3500 and dont even bother going for those shitty knockoffs. |

2x technic 1200 mk?? - buy used or buy new, usually the used ones aren't that much cheaper and can have problems that you won't notice on first glance. Better to just get a new set than to spend the couple hundred bucks you'll save on service.
Shure M44-7 carts - absolutely the best value in a cartridge imo. Whether your scratching or just mixing tracks, they sound great, track well and last long. And they won't cost you an arm & a leg like the Ortofons. For mixers, i love my Rane Empath. It's a good all-purpose board, great eq's, great fader, balanced xlr outs, separate monitor level, aux fx channel, assignable fader, curve adjust on xfader & 2 main channels. There's a 3rd channel for a CD player or whatever, and a mic channel w/ eq. and it sounds freakin awesome. That all might leave you enough to pick up a nice pair of powered monitors... i use the Tannoy Revels but i know there's lots of good brands on the market now. |

And Serato is rated more highly than Final Scratch 2 by a number of DJs out there... |

used is definately your best bet... especially ebay..
the 2 perfect condition Tech 1200's MK2 tables I got came out to 550 CND after all shipping.. And thats the price for the pair! WIcked deal, around 550 is usually the cost of buying one table locally.. |
