while i was in australia house seemed to be way bigger than breaks.
i saw kid kenobi twice at home playing in the 2nd room. the house room upstairs was SOOO much more pimp. i think that year he was ranked 2nd best according to those magazines you see all over the place in sydney... usually on oxford street |

Kid Kanobi #1 again... TELL ME SOMTHING I COULDNT GUESS!?!
Breaks are huge and very popular in Australia. Concidering how alot of aussies love both elecronica and hip hop... breaks is the perfect blend. I dont think you can really say "House is the biggest"? Really all genre's rule in Australia. Although the gernal pop house kind of sound is more common than hear, its more in the generalization of DANCE. The biggest headliners were always Hard House/Techno/Trance... much like hear in Vancouver. So how can you justify that house was the biggest? Take the biggest electronica night in Austrlia Sublime at Home Bar for example... Main room = Techno/Hard House/Trance 2nd most decked out room = Breaks pent house 3rd biggest room = House 4th small room = DnB or Chill/funk room. As for the local Aussie DJ's; I remember Kid Kanobi being hyped to the max more than any other local. Hard House DJ Jumping Jack only comes to mind because of his stupid name, David Devechas (my fav) was on the rise to be ONE OF Australia's best House DJs, and than there was a wiked DnB guy whos name I cant remember and played the best dnb tracks ive ever heard. I can easly say Precise is a much better DJ than Kid Kanobi... Yet you earn more points when you go out and produce tracks with Krafty and play gigs around the World. Also look at it marketing wise and how the industry works.I dont think Kid Kanobi has alot of competition with as many other Breaks DJ's in Aus like the hard house/tech/house/trance dj's do. Therefore if say this ranking was done by a poll the votes would be more spread out in the other genres, or goes to show how much hype helps :D Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jul 14, 05 at 02:17 AM. |

And knowing the house only head you are... how can you judge the breaks/dnb/techno scene/dj's if you were only ever intrested in house? Last edited by Ree Fresh; Jul 14, 05 at 02:06 AM. |

haha
Coming from someone who didn't like house until a visit to australia. I have a few papers from syndey and brisbane. As far as club listings go, there's way more house nights vs breaks nights. Who really cares, i just found australia really likes house.. And they're really open to new music Last edited by cheeseburger; Jul 14, 05 at 09:49 AM. |

Now, now kids... play nice.
Hype/Marketing are a very important part of success as is partnering with other people who are already successfull - those are called mentors. I love Breaks (some kinds) and have grown to like quality House music as well... so either way, I'll be happy with Australia! ;) |

Heh I’m playing nice, I always do. We just disagree, and that’s fine. A small joke turned this thread into what’s bigger, or what I did 2-3 years ago, and we all have our own personal experiences. Regardless, congrats to the kid and boy oh boy I’m glad I don’t have to hear “push up” twice a day |

LOL thats just great Ken... intresting how you try to argue when you spent 4/5 months way up north in tourist trap Cairns. BTW if you ever bothered to show more intrestest than you would know I was collecting House 8 months prior leaving to Aus and was first inspired by DJ Flave when Agrodave brought him out back in spring 2001.
Like I said the great thing about the Aussies is how they know how to enjoy everything. Although there may be more house nights/lounges... you have to take into concideration that theres a much wider variety of house (tech/hard/disco/tribal/prog/pop/etc etc) and I find alot of house heads to be quite picky... why you dont see alot of BIG House nights. Therefore your really just generalizing the whole House population :p Kraig, no cold sholder on Kid Kanobi if he has the talent to market him self and work his ass off. Take Pete Tong for example who is a terible DJ compared to what he stands next too, however becuase of his hard work and all the success hes earned doing the Essential mix its given him the right to stand high with the rest. I wouldnt argue that yes Kid Kanobi earned it. |
