Post/Math/Space-Rock thread

Is there a difference between these genres or sumpthin? I always hear them lumped together and I'm none too understanding of what goes where and why.

I like Mogwai. Really good stuff all over there. Other bands of the type I've heard are Murder By Death (formerly Little Joe Gould), Buckethead, Spiritualized (that's a bit more Indie tho...), Mono....

What am I missing? Give me some names and ideas. Wondering what's with the different names as well.

Sweet Christ another Mogwai fan. I came into this thread with the intent to suggest them, as they're the first post-rock band I've ever really listened to. I loved Come On Die Young, is their first album worth getting as well?

I haven't heard the first album (young team) too much. What I remember of it was that it was really really good.

The one I really like was the one right after Come On Die Young, Rock Action. They got a bit grimier on the noisier side. But they handle it in such a fucking class way.

I haven't heard much of them, but I have heard that if you like Mogwai you should check out Mono.

edit: Oh, and a couple of the tracks from Rock Action were also on a 5-track tour EP I saw on a p2p before my hard drive got stolen (irony!). That ep is fucking choice music. I highly recommend combining it with hallucinogens, specifically mushrooms, for some of that hearing-light-seeing-sound stuff.

that's a pretty diverse batch of bands / projects you mentioned, like the BUCKETHEAD stuff. I wouldn't have thought of his solo stuff as "space rock", or even 'mathrock' or whatever. Still, he's ok, aside from the GnR gig.

I used to listen to alot of this stuff - particularly 'mathrock', & hardcore bands with lots of jazzy stops, etc. . Could list quality older stuff to check out ( including some h/c related bands ):

No Means No ( recognize )

Don Cabellero

RODAN <<< amazing back in the day

SLINT

FAUCET

SHOTMAKER ( dope shit from Ottawa, early - mid 90's h/c )

A Minor Forest (Thrill Jockey Recs .. great band)

PEE

Storm & Stress

Universal Order of Armagedon (Kill Rock Stars)

The Great Unravelling ( ex Universal Order of Armagedon - Kill Rock Stars)

BOTCH

The Union of a Man & a Woman

Weights & Measures ( don't really like em, but they're of the style )

KARATE ( some stuff is ok )

BOYS LIFE ( early emo )

blah blah...

wow, showin my indie roots or whut?!

Like I say man, I'm pretty neophile when it comes to this... I've just figured out a lot of the Indie stuff in the last year, and I've heard a couple terms thrown around and I'm still trying to grok a lot of it... but I figure the more I listen to the more I have a good chance at finding stuff I like, yeah?

Great post man. I'm gonna go check some of that stuff out right now...

For post-rock I'd add early Trans Am, Tortoise/anything touched by John McEntire. Mouse on Mars were sort of on that kind of tip when I saw them live, as were Legendary Pink Dots (although more goth-y). Also maybe Stereolab, although I haven't heard much of their stuff. The whole late 90s Thrill Jockey scene kind of flew over my head.

If you like Spiritualized I suspect you'd maybe like My Bloody Valentine.
