Anyone who says The Beach Boys suck obviously doesn't understand the musical genius that is Brian Wilson. Without him, there would have been no Sgt. Peppers, and conceivably the idea of making a concept album would never have hit it mainstream, leaving such releases like Dark Side and OK Computer nowhere.
Anyhow, Wouldn't It Be Nice gets my vote, followed by the mad experimental pop song Good Vibrations. |

I hated the fucking Beach Boys for years. You know how The Dude hates the Eagles? That's how I felt about the Beach Boys. I thought their version of surf rock was piss poor compared to the sweet surf rock that came out of the 50s (the kind of stuff that the Red Elvis' bring back in 'The 6 String Samurai' or the surf rock that The Sadies play).
This opinion was based on the music. I had no idea about Brian Wilson going bonkers or the crazy elaborate production on their albums or the origin of concept albums. But when you listen to something a lot (everyone I know has been saturated with The Beach Boys) and still don't like it because you think it sounds horrible and cheesey and poppy without being ironic, does that mean you don't understand music or does that mean that music is art and art's genious is left in the ear of the beholder. I recently read this article http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2952 and got in some arguments with a couple guys at work about how much I thought The Beach Boys suck and it lead me to download Pet Sounds. I've listened to that album 3 or 4 times through and I have to say, it doesn't suck as much as I thought it would. It doesn't have the shitty 'let's go surfing' lyrics and as much of the typical 'I love this girl, here's the girl I love, this is where I want to go with this girl I love' subject matter as other songs. I even started to kinda maybe sorta like a few songs. It may (no promises) grow on me with a few more listens. That being said, just because an album has amazing production and intricate harmony and was the first of its kind and pioneered the way for others and was written by an insane genious doesn't mean people are stupid if they don't like it. It deserves to be listened to and given a chance but I can still say I think it sounds like shit even if it has all these redeeming qualities. Anyways, after all that my least hated Beach Boys song would probably be 'God Only Knows'. |

Brian Wilson was deaf in one ear. He mixed in mono, yes that's right. One of the first great producers in the world mixed in god dam mother fuckin mono. Bow down to Brian Wilson.
Good vibrations is his Masterpiece. The Theremin makes it's pop debut! |
