I think there's two kinds: songs that make you think of sad/happy times because you listened to that song a lot during a sad/happy time of your life, and songs that make you feel sad/happy just because they're sad/happy songs.
F'rinstance, that old Marcy Playground song "Sex and Candy" makes me feel kinda aimless, lonely and confused, 'cause it was on the radio all the time when I first moved to Calgary from New Brunswick in 1998, my first time living really far from home. I woke up to it on the clock/radio probably a hundred times, to long days in a shitty job with no money, friends, or direction. The other kind, I really like that song "Brand New Colony" by the Postal Service. I dunno, it doesn't really remind me of anything, but it makes me think of my fiancee and feel content and hopeful. :) |
