Producers are the new dj's?
man being a dj used to be really cool, till producers came along and made you look like a meathead.
that and, how many of the dj's we get flown into vancouver are actually renowned for thier dj skills, not thier productions? just throwing ideas out there. |

Maybe that's the whole problem. People are getting bookings strictly b/c of their production and not their DJ skill (which is obviously of little concern to a great many promoters and clubbers). I don't care if you're the best producer out there if you can't mix live then i don't wanna see you live.

what gets me is when a group or person gets booked and is put as "live pa" on the flyer when all they do is sequence tracks off ableton live... and don't do anything to change up the tracks or whatever... thats not live pa... thats just djing with a laptop...

Well when knifehandchop,kid606, and eats tape were at the brickyard for there "paws across america tour" all I can say is what a performance for live pa sets ESPECIALLY eats tape.... Although it was a 45 minute performance that they put on it was the best damn acid techno I have EVER heard. With the drum machines and synths and how they operated these things were amazing. It comprised of 2 people that were consistantly busy with creating the beat and rhythm on the spot.... I still can't get over that set they put on....
Here's an actual pic of there gear that they haul..... Last edited by b0ld; Nov 05, 05 at 10:19 PM. |

kid606 moving to vancouver?????? wow thats really questionable.... I mean he lives in san francisco right now..... the question is why would he want to move to vancouver???? is it because of the rather growing underground idm/breakcore/experimental techno scene that is coming out of canada at this moment???? fuckin weird....... where did you get this rumour from? |

It goes without saying that too be a great artist you have to kill it in production, and slay the crowd live. Personally ive been a sucker for producers my entire life, there is just something about a great dj, who never cuts their own material that makes me feel disappointed in some way. Thats not to say there hasnt been a number of djs throught my life of live shows that have been amazing. And with saying this i can understand the disappointment of heads who are stoked to see an act whos tracks have secured them as fans in the first place, only to eat a dick at the show.
obvious solution or goal to work for? all around skillz, including business and marketing. My personal experiences over the last few years found me disappointed more often then none with the dj skills. I have also been more sober and clean than in my entire life, so who knows how reletive of a part that plays? But in the same vein, ive discovered, explored some of the best, tightly produced music that i have heard in quite awhile. On a bit of a tangent, ive found that artists in the realms of anything broken and such, rarely go on the massive touring scheduale that perhaps might be the case in other genres. Any thoughts? Touring along with an insane practise scheduale go hand in hand with great performances, but with saying that you see less long players in electronic music instead it is more focussed on putting out eps and singles. So i would think that there is always a situation where there is no set prolonged period of time set aside for either producing OR touring. I wonder if this has an impact on the "reality" of lacklustre live perfomances? Lastly in regards to live pa, the various perfomances i have been lucky to witness have been amazing, so perhaps im part of a fortunate few? peace+respect fable |

I disagee, most producers spend the majority of thier time in the studio not mixing. All that most people want is to be unique. Playing other peoples music isn't very original. It's seems to me that the djs have go the extra mile to be different. The easiest way of doing so is to start production. dj Bailey is one of my favorite djs as he isn't djing as a producer. He's has the draw and the connection to get all the fresh tracks as he wants and is brilliant behind the desks. This quality and level of dj is not common any more. |

rumours are also going round that Q Project will be doing the same, cause he has a girl in seattle (i am guessing that it is easier for him to live in canada and travel down there, than to move to the US) |

and talking about "good" live acts, crystal method is a league of their own. the seperation between "every other (shitty) live act" and the "A LIST live acts" is enormous. it's not like dj'ing, where there are always good dj's. live acts either SUCK HARD. or kick ass. there's not much room for anything in between.
