breakbeat era
my "oldie but a goodie" choice for "listen of the week" Ultra Obscene
die, size and vocalist leonie laws, heralded an uprecedented sound back in 99 and to date in my humble opinion this is the best example of tasty vocals sharing the limelight with the beats themselves. it was 2000' and i met this cutey who later become a good friend while travelling abroad. She called brooklyn home, and hooked me up with a tape that still get heavy listening today. And low and behold i was privy to one of my most favorite lp's of all time. Rock solid, and a buried gem amonst the world of disposable singles and cd mixes. One of a dying breed of quality "longplayers" theres not a single track that wouldnt be able to stand on its own. Its what i think about, when i want real "sexy" dnb. The vox of Leonie Laws is something akin to early portishead, and with smart lyrics and die+sizes darkley simple but mysterious beats, its perfect for a rainy evening in vancouver. If you havent checked it yet, I would suggest to get on it, becuase i personally am of the opinion that this Lp is straight timeless! peace+respect fable ps:what ever happened to leonie laws? |
