I'm digging "The Sinister Minister" and "Earth Jam" by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. It may not actually be jazz, but I consider it to be.
as for funk.. I'm a sucker for The Commodores. I played bass back in highschool for the jazz band and Brick House was fun because I slapped the shit out of it. It sounded so slick. |

ahhhh so many... been buying up the old funk & soul 45s like nobody's biz
recent scores: The Bar-Kays - more funk than soul, but they were Otis Redding's backing band until disaster struck. 4 Bar-Kays went down in the plane with Otis. Still, they went on to do their best work after re-forming... 'Let's Have Some Fun' and 'Angel Eyes' are 2 of my faves & i scored BOTH 45s last week!! so happy. I dropped 'Let's Have Some Fun' twice @ Tokyo on saturday. another great bar-kays track: 'Holy Ghost'. some huge drum break action on that sucker, it is most definitely NOT in need of more cowbell! Kool & The Gang - yeah, they're very well known, but i can't get enough of that 'Funky Stuff' - another huge score on 45 from last week. 'Hollywood Swingin' is at the top of my want list, i need that tune sooo bad. obviously 'Jungle Boogie' & 'Celebration' are essentials. Jimmy Castor Bunch - if ya don't recognize the horn line from 'It's Just Begun', you've probably been living under a rock for the past 30 years (or since ou were born for most fnk'rs). Wish i could remember some other track names (there's 'Troglodyte' & 'Bertha Butt Boogie' but those are novelty tracks, far from their best work) cause there's some killer afro-latin drum workouts on their debut LP. The Isley Bros - just scored 'It's Your Thang' on 45 & it's sooo sweet. Too many great tracks to list from this crew. Edwin Starr - one of Motown's less prolific artists (from what i can tell?), he's known cheifly for 'War' but has some killer tunes out there that are impossible to find. names are escaping me... Jam & Lewis - been sooo feeling the 80s rnb lately, and these guys were the top hit makers of the era. Cherelle 'Didn't Mean To Turn You On', SOS Band 'Just Be Good To Me', pretty much all of Janet Jackson's early work... they're even on the new Gwen Stefani album. The Meters - scored 'Cissy Strut' and 'Look Ka-Py-Py' on 45, but my fav is still 'The Hand Clap Song'. Clive & bros had the funk on lock. The O'Jays - 'For The Love Of Money'.... were these guys from the future? that bassline is sublime. Cymande - don't know much about these guys, but 'Bra' and 'The Message' are some of the deepest grooves out there. serious afro-funk. Jackson 5 - duh! 'Want You Back' is the biggest no-brainer of all soul music. If this tune doesn't make you feel good the moment it drops... you're probably Michael Jackson! aggh, i could go on & on.... most of the good funk & soul we have is on 45, which is a pain in the ass for some people... but at 6 bux a pop, i wouldn't be complaining! our 45 section (and my whole shop kinda) is in a state of dissarray due to ongoing rennovations. but if you come by i'll pull you out some gems for sure! |

[quote=Wood]post supremes, but i gotta mention Diana's 'UPSIDE DOWN' as one of the most bad ass disco soul cuts.
also on the female motown tip... Fontella Bass! scored the 45 of 'Rescue Me' QUOTE] YES. to both of those. fuckin eh. Must add some old blues here. Anything by Ledbelly. Skip James - Devil Got My Woman -Sickbed Blues -Walking the Sea Elmore James - Dust My Broom - Mean Mistreating Mama - The Sky is Crying (oh, screw it - the whole Dust My Broom LP) If you like blues guitar try John Fahey.
