$20 too much for Max Graham - Airtight?
I've got a lead on Max Graham - Air Tight / Yaletown 12", $20cdn plus postage. A promo copy aparantly onced owned by John Digweed although it was never played. I've already purchased records from this source, and it worked out well. But wow, when it's said and done it's like $27, that's a lot of money for one record. But Airtight is one of my wanted, sought after tracks.
I am quite new to record buying, and thought I would throw this out there to see what someone more experienced has to say. Is this one pretty hard to come by? |

Classic tune :)
It's not that rare, maybe the promo rec that you're buying is though. Usually there are only a low number of promos pressed, but the regualr released version will be the exact same track. You probably wouldn't be able to find the regualr release in a record shop, so $30 probably isnt too much. If all else fails there is always good ol' beatport. =P |

considering that import 12"s run around $20 a/t anyways, that doesn't sound like a bad price for an out of print piece that you've sought after. There's certainly tunes out there that i could (and will) spend a lot more than $27 on.
or you can cheap out & get it on beatport, but it's a sorry substitute for having it on wax. |

no doubt, this is definitely vinyl worthy. I'm trying to get my all time favorites in that format, and this one is up the list. I've even danced to this track with my friends at The Drink, spun by Max himself, for added sentimental value. Thanks for the comments guys, I think I'm gonna go for it. Sounds like this is definitely a fair price for a never played promo copy of a stellar, and what sounds like out of print track.
One further question, do you ever feel a promo is more desirable if they are by nature rarer? Or is the nicer sleeve of the commercial release a bigger factor? |

sounds like your into collecting the record for resale value...basically its worth what people will pay for it...i highly doubt its never been played or that diggers owned it, but none of that should have any bearing on whether or not you want the record...if saving it and hoping its worth a lot of money one day is what you want...who knows could happen!

Valid points. I don't think resale value has much bearing at all for me. I am collecting, and I love the track and I hope to have it for a long long time and to get lots of good use from it.
The question more or less is what is market value. As Akeel mentioned, that's what people will pay. Availability can have a bearing, but not always. I've begun thinking about a rarer white label vs. a more common comercial release, not for resale purposes, but for the sake of owning something that is difficult to obtain. Presumable, a white label potentially was the medium that introduced crowds of people to the track for the first time, although it's history is difficult to impossible to substantiate and for that reason I agree with Akeel, it shouldn't have much bearing on a final purchase decision. A commercial release on the other hand has a nice sleeve with info and graphics, which to me is an aspect of the excitement and nostalgia of being the proud owner of the record, especially for tracks that stick out like land marks on the road travelled. As an example, Jes Brieden signed my motorcycle record a week ago last saturday, and she recognized it as an older release. It's not a promo, but it's pretty plain. The newer release features a gorgeous full colour photograph edge to edge of Jes on a motorcycle. She said she was super excited about the newer one because "they finally put my picture on something." Now I wish I had shelled out and bought a shiny new copy of the new release before the show instead of the older one, but hindsight is 20/20. But then again, the sleeve design of theolder release isn't without historical significance. Whatever, it was still amazing. Back to the topic. Missy paid the same price just recently, and all other comments have been in that direction so, good enough for me. Not much chance in obtaining this for half that price in good condition, so I've told the seller I'm commited to the purchase and he's presently holding it for me. |
