DJ Quest is a name synonymous with all things breakbeat. Since first getting into the music in early 2000, Quest has been instrumental in shaping the heavier, more club-oriented style of breaks, alongside likeminded artists such as The Stanton Warriors, Deekline, Future Funk Squad and Tayo. Quest's vinyl career started on Pulse Recordings, his first label, on which he released many a massive track, hitting the right notes in both the breaks and garage scenes. The music back then (2000-2001) never really had a home or a name, and was tagged by the music press with all sorts of strange names, "breakbeat garage" being the one that eventually stuck. Quest came to dominate this crossover scene, with anthems such as "Warship", "Egypt" (with Ken Mac), "Captain Porno" and "Trunklets". Things started to move very quickly after a chance meeting with Deekline down at the infamous Music House (where Deekline first heard Quest's "Warship" and got very excited!), and a very important partnership and friendship was formed that still exists to this day. Quest was signed to Deekline's labels, Rat Records and Hardcore Beats, and the result was many more hits in this burgeoning scene. With tracks such as "Bad Boy DJ" and "Old Skool" becoming massive hits overnight, this paved the way for a project that is still very special to Quest. Rat Sessions Volume 1, released in 2002, was arguably the first album ever released in the more bassline, club orientated vein, featuring tracks such as "Floor Basher", "Say Yeah", "Feeling" and "Synthetic Funk". Accompanied with a mix cd that featured top drum'n'bass MC IC3, this album sent shockwaves through the industry. With the album under his belt, Quest felt it was the right time to start his own label. This was of course the label we all know as the infamous Cyberfunk Recordings. With a back catalogue consisting of an enviable array of breaks hits, this label has been instrumental in the shaping of the breaks scene and the launching of some big big names that the scene has come to know and love. Quest's vision and support for artists such as the Breakfastaz, DJ Mutiny, Odissi and MC Ken Mac have come to make them the household names that they are today. In addition to his output on Cyberfunk, Quest has also written huge tracks for other labels, including "Wormhole" (with Odissi) and "Blackhole" (with Ed 209), both on Hardcore Beats, and "Resident" and "Oil Drum", both on Mechanoise. He also co-wrote, with Ben Coupland, the epic "Haunted Gospel" (Botchit and Scarper), a track still popular with many almost four years after its release. He also has tracks and remixes on labels such as Wireframe, Supercharged, Against the Grain, Lot 49, Downbeat, Combat Wax and his new imprint, Mile High Recordings.
