Fuck sad music. . . yeah, I'm talking about you emo!!
It's all over the radio. . every popular song these days seems to be about being single, their dad doesn't love them, self-loathing. . fuck, there's something to be said about happiness man. I can't stand to listen to NIN anymore. . the man's never smiled in his life, I swear!
Simple Plan - your parents don't love you because you whine all the time. Good Charlotte - the only reason you're a bunch of misfits is because you try too fucking hard. I'm writing songs about climbing trees, smoking doobies with a good buddy. . easy living. . good times. There ARE positive emotions. . use them! |

Emo is one thing but I really think you guys have a misconstrued perception of 'dark' or sad music.
There is a lot of really beautiful not so happy music that can be deemed as revolutionary, take Portishead for example. Trip hop is one of those forms of music that dabbles into a lot of darker beats and melencholy lyrics but it is absolutely stunning. There's also a lot of darker hip hop, I find a lot of Aesop Rocks music rather dark a lot of the time he incorporates classical instrumentals to make his sound really resonate. Don't let these bubblegum coated 'emo' bands taint your vision of music that can essentially be deemed as therapeutic. God there are so many artists such as Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley, Placebo, Blonde Redhead, Interpol, Radiohead, Massive Attack, PJ Harvey that will explore that other region and create music to appeal to a vast array of emotions. We're human beings afterall, a lot of these artists will make songs that can relate to different scenerio's and different feelings and that for me is the most important thing a musician or band can do. |

^^^^
but there is integrity to that music. .. especially Elliott Smith and Jeff Buckley. Today's pop music doesn't show that integrity. . they're just writing sad music because it's easy to write and sells. THAT'S why it pisses me off. Good post, lady. I'm impressed. |

^ No you're absolutely right, a lot of the artists that are coming out today have these soulless songs that sound like whining; there isn't really any emotion conveyed through the sound or lyrics.
I remember just being so utterly disappointed when Avril Lavigne was starting to get popular because I felt like she bastardized something sacred. Now a lot of these bands are sort of going on to do the same thing. |
