there are a few reasons why a lot of promoters will look for random talent to fill the first couple hours of an event.
firstly, as mentioned, the promoter doesnt have to pay anyone just to open the club earlier. as well, I know as a dj that it takes either a big owed favour or substantial financial equivalency to be interested in playing the opening slot of an event, especially if you're off the decks before 11pm. meanwhile rookie djs are eager to play for any slot they can get. on top of that, I know that when I was first starting, not only did I play tunes constantly at my house to friends of mine, but that those friends were always eagar to come out and support and hear me on a dancefloor when I first started playing out (as opposed to a few years down the road when knowing that they will be able to see said dj play again, and will be more likely to say "we can see him next week/month/x amount of time"). so the promoter has not only saved on cost of the dj, but also brought a few extra people in the door for the night, potentially meaning they come back on future nights. but thats why most promoters that do give away opening sets arent dj's as well. cuz as mentioned in this thread, there is much more programming ability required as an opening dj than most rookies can provide, and most seasoned dj's that are promoters wouldnt stand for someone who doesn't know their role. |

If you ask a DJ to open for some one worth their time such as a super hot local or out of town dj there should be no problem. Its opening for a DJ that hasnt been playing out as long as you that sucks ass. Reconizing sinority is a way of respect for entertainers.

you also get other people saying how same promoters are only booking same people (their friends). its good advertisement outside of the usual 'so and so at such and such place on such a day'
absolutely agree on the know-how for opening sets the worst is when the opener is playing faster than the headliner, or same caliber anthems as the headliner |

So many good points have been made. New, not so good DJ's will play whenever they can, even if they suck. Some Promoters don't think about a fluent DJ Roster that builds up to the headliner. Someone mentioned that people usually don't show up to parties till late. But those people who arrive fashionably late usually expect a party to be happening when they get there.
A good opening dj is inviting, entertaining and a good crowd reader. They need flexibility in what they bring in their bag and it's also good for a promoter to let the DJ know what style to play (or even structure who they hire based on what they know about their style). But some promoters will play whoever they can get (much like some DJ's will play for whoever THEY can get). And sometimes that drive (playing or booking whoever they can get) is what it takes to become Tiesto Van Oakenfold or a successful long term promoter... whatever. :^) |
