Some peeps in this thread were talking about “talent”, someone mentioned talent is subjective.

To me there are two categories of “good” when it comes to DJ’s there are “good DJ’s” and “Talented artists”.

A good DJ can be classified as someone who reads the crowd well and knows when to play what and does it very well, good example could be say someone like Czech. He rocks crowds.

A “Talented artist” is someone who adds an element of their personal expression to the performance taking things a step further, lots of examples have already been cited in this thread, DJs who MC/Sing , play live instruments, incorporate effects or play live P.A, turntablism etc.

That’s not to say someone can’t fall under both categories, but it’s the artist who are pushing things that get my mad respect. Cuz really, anyone can mix, it only takes time, money and commitment, to push it further takes talent.

angel (from organix) - this guy does most of the opening sets for organix - there have been times when I've gone to organix or one of the headliner shows they hold completely dog tired to find that, as soon as I walk in the door, I'm totally pumped and jumping around in the corridor waiting for my ticket inside... solid mixing and an excellent sense of crowd and track selection...

ronin (from tribalharmonix) - I remember seeing him dj a THx event when he was just starting out, he was still just getting the hang of mixing but he played a lot of nice downtempo before the show... then I saw him open up for Ott at the Red Room and I was just totally blown away by how far he has come in his craft... what really sticks out for me as well is that a lot of the tracks he plays aren't just full-on psy tracks, but more of an ethereal, ambient influenced psytrance that I doesn't get played much... they have a strong beat and bass but more trippy, floaty lead/fx lines...

How many Relm's, Z-trips, and Q-bert's are there out there that you have no idea about because they haven't found a way to bring what they do to a large enough audience yet? Take a look at some of the most successful acts out there, Tiesto for instance, he is not the most talented DJ on the planet or even close. However he's definitely one of the most successful.
Completely agreed. There are many lacking DJ's out there. The thrust of what I'm saying though is that people are going on and on about how great these new DJ's are and I can't see anything that sets them apart.

Talent: the potential or factual ability to perform a skill better than most people.

Us the werd properly people or it becomes meaningless. As an example Relm reminds me of Q-Bert and Z-Trip combined by bringing superb technical skill, with great track selection, and interaction with the crowd. Of the hundreds of DJ's I've seen very few have impressed me more. Q-Bert can scratch like no one's fucking business. Z-Trip takes track selection to a completely different level and like the old cliche literally takes the crowd on a journey. He also interacts with the crowd really well. This is talent to me. These people can do these things better than most people, I'd even go as far as to say a LOT better.
