Playing alot of one aritst/label and one arist/label only.
You ever get that? When you start appreciating a certain sound soooo much and b/c its so good and theres only a couple artists who can produce a sound like it you end up buying the whole cataloge. Take squarepusher or Aphex Twin. They're amazing producers and lets be honest theres noone else in the world who is able to make music like them. Another example and one that interests me is Get Physical. IMO this labels artists can't be duplicated, which makes it difficult for me b/c its all I buy!!! Groups like Bugz in the Atttic, dudes like James Lavalle. These motherfuckers produce music so unique that djs are going to start playing "one artist only" dj sets. Well thats a bit far but I'll tell you this much. A year ago when I saw someone put together a set with 3 or 4 of the same artist's tracks in a row, I laughed. I thought it was effortless and showed a lack of creativity. But now I think if done right something like that would intrigue me to listen more.
what do you think? |

i know i would end up doing that, so whenever i buy tunes, i make sure to chek out allll the labels. and vary them when i buy them. but im starting to see a lot of Virus, and Noisa records in my collection. hahaha. but ya. as dabbler said it, good tunes are good tunes.

Ive done it sometimes if the sounds are right and go with the flow or vibe of the party/event. Ive done 2 mixes now where alot of the same artist/label were used at certin points to achieve a certin style/sound or whatever you want to call it. Though, thoes were planned for a reason to come out with a certin sound.
Just playing out all the time with the same artist and or label, I try to avoid and keep a variety. |

I find its better to pay less attention to whats writen on the cover, and just focus on the music. I could easily play and all Baobinga set, and have came close to it on occasion :? |

personally I think that that is one of the things that makes a good dj.
the ability to flow between sounds, and not be pigeonholed into playing one artist/sound. although I own pretty much every Finger Lickin' record that has come out, the last thing I want to do is play these tracks continually. I personally try to ensure that I never play 2 tracks in a row by the same artist or on the same label. although it can happen, as one the sets I played live that was recorded, when I was listening to it finding the tracklist to post the set, I realized that I played 2 tracks in a row that were the same producer, but on different labels, and the way the tracks blended in the mix, it makes sense in hindsite that they had the same producer. but honestly when I see a mix that has the same producers names or even label names continually throughout the mix I will rarely download it because the dj isnt even really trying then. thats the type of thing you can get away with when you're playing your own tunes, or you are signed to said label, or its a mix you made with the specific intent of showing off an artists work, but otherwise, isnt really fulfilling the dj's responsibility of trying to expose people to the different gambits of the sound you play. |

it's easy to fall in to it if you are feeling a certain groove.
I find I will keep reaching for the same artist/remixers production if the crowd is feeling that sound, but if you don't change it up they will certainly get bored. focusing on collecting an artist or lables full collection will lead to this and for my sound I could do 5 hour tribute sets for : BT Elite Force Hybrid Aquasky Luke Chable & Meat katie Just because I have so many of their tracks. one of these days we'll have jam in this fashion matt!
