Trial Extended until Nov 30th

September 23, 2003
Later closing hours for liquor establishments extended

The trial period for later closing hours in downtown cabarets, bars, clubs, lounges, and neighbourhood and hotel pubs will be extended until November 30 to provide enough time for City Council to be presented with the results and policy recommendations.

Since July 4, licensed “liquor primary” establishments in the downtown peninsula have been allowed to to extend their closing times (with liquor service) up to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, on nights preceding a statutory holiday, and during city-wide festivals and events. Fifty-seven establishments participated in the trial.

The trial period was scheduled to end September 29, but since the earliest anticipated date available for City staff to report back to Council will be in November, the City has decided to continue the trial period until the end of November with the following conditions:

• All participating establishments will have to re-apply for extended hours to both the City and the Province.
• New applications will not be considered (only businesses that participated in the trial period will be eligible to apply for the extension).
• To alleviate any noise issues, establishments that have been problematic during the trial period will not be granted an extension or will only be given short-term extensions (likely limited to one- or two-week extensions).
• Monitoring by City licence inspectors and Vancouver Police will continue.
• Additional public feedback will be encouraged.

Anyone else finding that sometimes 4 feels early now....

I get home and I get so frustrated that i can't order pizza

I think that with us becoming an Olympic city that this late closures is something we are going to hold onto...and the same for transit (or at least I hope so)

now bring on the late Skytrain closures!!!
