Earl Von Bye @ SHAPE Thursday Jan 29th
Earl von Bye (Black Tiger Recordings, Nice Kitty Music, Drunken Monkey, Lightswitch Dance Collective)
In 1993, Earl Von Bye’s first Rave set was in Edmonton, alongside local DJ legends Cory Payne and DJ Dragon (Vu-Tag), was his foot in the door to the underground DJ scene. His first underground residency in ’95 at the Pitt, Edmonton, placed him firmly with the scene’s elite DJs. As resident and promoter/owner of ZEN from ’96 to ’98, he himself became a local DJ name and earned respect as a pioneer of the electronic music scene in Edmonton. In ’98 EVB moved to Calgary for the rapidly booming scene and Trance became his specialty. In ’99 he became a resident with one of Calgary’s top promoters, Eternal Promotions. At the various Eternal parties from ’99 to ’01, EVB played along with the likes of DJ Micro, Taylor, DJ Enrie, Dave Aude, Mark Lewis, Grooverobber, Mac Zimms, The Freak, and Anabolic Frolic. The highlight of this residency was at “Visions Of Paradise” Jan 24. 2001, where EVB took the main stage after John Kelly (US) and blew the crowd away! (Two years later, people still comment on this set). Gaining popularity and momentum in 2001 landed EVB a new residency with one of Canada’s most successful promotions company, Def Star Productions at Evolution Fridays. Since 2001, Evolution Fridays has featured Earl Von Bye’s name along with superstar DJs such as Christopher Lawrence, Max Graham, Dave Ralph, Taylor, DJ Brian, Mark Oliver, and Mark Scaife. The highlights of this residency included opening sets for Aquagen, Jerry Bonham, and Darude, as well as playing both the pre and post parties for Judge Jules. 2002 to present, EVB as he is now affectionaltely known by the Calgary en-masse has been called to play with the likes of Judge Jules (the second time), and Lisa Lashes for an unprecedented tag team appearance that will be remembered for years to come. If you like it hard, funky, driving, inspired and seamlessly mixed EVB will not dissapoint. See Earl von Bye this week at Shape (398 Richards St.) with resident support from Mirka L. Cerny and Akeel.
