John Askew- UK (The Gallery/ Ministry Of Sound/ Cream/ Kiss 100/ Discover / Kompressed Recordings) http://www.djjohnaskew.com http://www.kiss100.com http://www.turnmills.co.uk Biography: Resident at: THE GALLERY - TURNMILLS (London) THE GALLERY - FABRIQUE (Moscow) MINISTRY OF SOUND (Worldwide Tours) CREAM (Worldwide Tours) KISS 100 - (London) “Kiss Presents John Askew” - Every Monday night (11pm UK time) on London’s most respected and pretigeous dance station - Kiss 100 - John hosts the trance & techno show. To check out the show from outside of the London area - log on to www.kiss100.com To be included on the weekly playlist mail out from John’s show - please email [email protected] Head of A&R for Kompressed Recordings & Discover Recordings John Askew is without doubt one of the hottest tech/trance producer/djs in the UK, if not the world, right now. After the huge successes of his debut singles “Vellum”, “The Door” and “New Dimension”, he has gone on to deliver release after release of consistently high quality club music - either through his own Discover or Kompressed labels or via one of his many remixes for high profile labels such as Duty Free, Ministry of Sound, Euphonic or Paul van Dyk’s legendary Vandit. From guest appearances on BBC Radio One, to being asked to host his own weekly show on London’s prestigious Kiss 100, from exclusive residencies at 3 of the World’s most influential clubs (The Gallery, Cream and Ministry of Sound) to an ever increasing number of high profile guest slots around the world, John Askew is now enjoying the rewards of over a decade of consistently hard work. History After spending most of his teens playing guitar in a variety of local rock bands, John’s musical alliance was suddenly disrupted when he attended a rave in Cornwall in 1993. He immediately ditched both his band and his beloved Les Paul in exchange for a pair of decks. After a year of practicing for up to 6 hours a day John made his club debut at the notorious North London 80’s Acid House venue - Woody’s. A few months later he blagged himself a slot at a rave in Wiltshire which in turn led to a residency for the then infamous Wiltshire based sound system “Code Red”. This position gave John the opportunity to regularly play to thousands of underground revelers that would loyally make their way out into the countryside every weekend to party in the open air. His sound was influenced by a mixture of the tough melodic German dance music that was fast putting Frankfurt on the map as the epicenter of the trance scene, and the hard, more percussive sounds that artists like CJ Bolland and Jeff Mills were pioneering. At the end of 1995 overwhelming pressure from the police led the organisers of the Code Red raves to move their parties from the fields into licensed clubs and venues. With this move John started warming up for a host of top international techno names such as Billy Nasty, Dave Angel and Dave Clarke. He quickly established a name for himself and was subsequently booked to play a number of other underground nights including Universe's legendary Final Frontier at Club UK where John rocked the decks on numerous occasions along side a plethora of bog names including Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox and Sven Vath. Over the next few years John found himself becoming a regular at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, traveling extensively across Europe to deliver his now trademark sound. A sound and style that one Scandinavian radio presenter summed up as “…..like watching Jeff Mills mixing but using Paul van Dyk’s records!!”. The next 5 years brought John residencies and guest slots at some of the hottest club nights in the South of England, including the infamous UFO Club which hosted debauched parties for thousands of party people every weekend in the picturesque Longleat Country House. In 1999 John teamed up with Bristol's most respected techno dj, Simmer, to form Shimmy recordings. With highly acclaimed reviews from the national dance press and a huge underground following in the West Country, John began to gain a reputation for his unique writing and production skills which combined euphoric melodies with hard punchy beats. In 2000 John was asked to be the resident for Universe’s (of Tribal Gathering fame) “Sorted” tour. In one month John played 21 gigs across the country along side many of the world’s finest djs including Carl Cox, Orbital, Timo Maas, Danny Rampling, Danny Howells, Way Out West and John "00" Fleming. On NYE 2000 John rocked the main stage at Ministry of Sounds’ infamous Dome event. His technical wizardry on the decks in front of 26,000 clubbers led Ministry to offer him a residency at their world famous club - Ministry of Sound - London - where John was resident for 2 years. John’s end of the night 3 hour sets in Ministry’s “Box” were legendary and often had the club rocking well past their 8am closing time. In 2003 Danny Newman, Tall Paul’s brother and owner of London’s coolest dance club - Turnmills, heard John play and immediately asked John to become an exclusive resident for The Gallery. Having been one of John’s favourite nights in the country, he immediately said yes and has been resident there ever since - playing along side the likes of Tiesto, Armin, Ferry, Tall Paul and just about every other credible dj from the international circuit. Today John continues to hold a residency for Ministry of Sound worldwide tours which has seem him play to thousands of fans all over South America and Europe. Since 2001 John has been pushing his distinctive sounds to the masses through his now firmly established record label - Discover - which has also seen releases from The Thrillseekers, Ralphie B, Pablo Gargano, Germany’s Kyau vs Albert, Backbeat and many others. Today, although he continues to A&R Discover, John has taken a step back from the running of the label in order to concentrate on his new project - Kompressed Recordings. With recent releases from Airbase, Arc in the Sky, Goldenscan and John himself, Kompressed has needed little time to establish itself as another high quality output for the harder edged dance music and a true reflection of what to expect from a John Askew dj set. John’s diary is now full of dates at some of the world’s coolest clubs including: The Gallery, Cream, Ministry of Sound, Slinky, God’s Kitchen, Centro, and many more. I talked to John this morning and he is stoked to tear the roof off Viva. Don't miss your chance to be part of his set that will be recorded for his KISS 100 radio show!
Also... this night is going to be the official release party for his newest singles on the recently launched 'Discover Dark' label. So don't be suprised if he brings a few vinyls for us! :D |
