Stanley Park Restoration Plan

It's finally put in motion. It'll cost about 9 million dollars to fix our beautiful greenery (from the seawall to Prospect Point), but it will return the Vancouver's jewel back to its original state.

That's great to hear, I've been avoiding the seawall since I don't want to see it in a terrible state.

you can still walk 80% of the seawall. There are a few detours that you have to take to traverse prospect point, but most of the park is open. You can see the damage first hand, its quite mind blowing actually. The destructive forces of nature at its best.

Stanley Park brings in tourist revenue.

This provincial revenue goes to social programs like the homeless situation in Vancouver.

Everything is not always black and white.

I think with the amount of damage we do to the environment, things like this should be an environment... especially in the land of concrete parking lots and shopping malls that is Vancouver.

The damage we do to ourselves... well, that won't matter when the Earth stops replenishing itself.

So what you are saying is, the homeless epidemic in Vancouver won't go away if we just ignore it?

I think cleaning up stanley park is very important, and a good place for the city to invest money. 9 mil seems excessive though. The high price tag is probably partly due to the speed of the cleaning they plan to do.

I dont know much about the homless situation, but homeless people have to want to help themselves before any amount of money will do anything for their situation. But thats not on topic.

cosigned.

I think it's great they are putting money into fixing stanley park. The revenue from Stanley park aids this city, without it we wouldn't have one of our biggest tourist attractions, nor anywhere near the amount of tourists.

Like cubed said, that money filters down into the social programs that are there, but people have to want to change and have the will to help themselves before those will go to any use.

to those that like to rollerblade the seawall like i do...

it is still possible, but about 3/4s of the way thru a detour is necessary that goes up to prospect point (i think?) which involves

1) rollerblading up a fairy good hill for about 10-15 minutes. good news is your reward is a nice long down hill afterwards.

2) rollerblading on the road some of the way. shouldnt be a problem cause its a one way two lane road, and your going with traffic and most of the time you should be quite visible to the other drivers on the road. but then again, dont have your mother call me if you get smoked by a car and end up in the hospital, i didnt.

take care,

tomek.

It's a sad thing to see. I went rollerblading and was stopped by the devistation. Part of Stanley Park is almost all gone. It suxs, but one can hope after the restoration it'll look better then ever.
