Like Breaks? BROKEN CREW (Mtl) coming to Vancouver May 27th!!
if you're a fan of breakbeats (or good music for that matter), come down to element monday the 27th to catch the BROKEN CREW. hailing from montreal and with influences ranging from hip hop to house to rock and everything in between, these guys know how to rock the party and give the dancefloor a swift kick in the ass.
great talent, fresh sounds, good times...and i hear those quebec boys are cute to boot! check out the writeup on them in this week's georgia straight. "Bad boys of Broken Crew bringing the breakbeats" by Deena Cox The Montreal Breakbeat collective Broken Crew is embarking on its first Canadian tour. Piling into a "giant luxury car" for the cross-country road trip, the six guys who make up the group have set aside their regularly scheduled day jobs, waited for their university exams to finish, and are now on their way to Vancouver for a gig at the Element Sound Lounge on Monday (May 27). Comprised of four DJs, a manager, and a visual artist, the members of the sextet are pioneers in coordinating a breakbeat tour of this size, in that they'll be stopping at most major cities west of Quebec. On their home turf, Broken Crew are well-known and well-received. In a city where there is no shortage of clubs, and legal after-hours venues, these guys have developed a bit of a reputation. "We're all sort of rockers and are known as the punk-rock breakbeat crew of the city," explains Taylor, the crew's manager and promoter, on the line from Montreal. "We're sort of a circus, you know, a group of guys who, wherever they go, there's always a bit of a disruption." With monikers fit for a circus sideshow - Sase One, Poontz, Melon, and D.Kai - the Broken Crew's DJs are originally from all across Canada. D.Kai, aka Daniel Fibiger, is from Vancouver but is in Montreal attending McGill University. The cross-country move, he says, was the best decision he ever made. "Montreal, as a city, tends to embrace the nightlife, and in Vancouver, for whatever reason, the city has tried to shut it down. As a result, here in Montreal you have a city that's just bursting with music, with life, and with culture," says Fibiger, who at 20 is the youngest member of Broken Crew. "Vancouver, you know, I love it, but it's got a long way to go before it catches up." D.Kai adds he's in it for the "anything goes" vibe of Broken Crew, whose music is inspired by hip-hop and funk rhythms. "You can come dressed in your pyjamas, or you can wear a garbage bag, or you can be decked out in a Prada suit. It doesn't matter. We're very casual people and that's the beauty of it." Keeping true to the old-school scene he was never a part of, D.Kai offers some advice to Vancouver scenesters: "The bottom line of this whole thing is to dance and lose your mind for a while. It's supposed to be an escape, not something that should be put under a microscope and argued over." so there you have it folks. come down to element on monday to check out montreal's kings of breaks, presented by circa and hosted by edit. i believe cover's only 8 bucks. can't wait, it's gonna be a fun night...see you all there. wootwoot! |
