DJ BUCK at Deepen Sat. Aug 10th
Deepen Saturdays at the Lotus Sound Lounge. 455 Abbott Street in Vancouver.
http://www.deepen.cc This Saturday August 10th we present very special guest DJ Buck alongside myself. Here is his bio.... It takes a big man to admit that luck has had a hand in his success. DJ Buck credits luck as a main component in his personal success story; the other predominant ingredient is talent. Buck was born in New York in a year that shall remain a mystery. At the age of eleven, he was transplanted to the West Coast and years later, played an instrumental role in the birth San Francisco's house music scene. As an original member of Third Floor Productions alongside DJ Rasoul and B. McCarthy, Buck help to build the now thriving infrastructure from the ground up. All of my music is psychedelic to some degree, says Buck, which is an abbreviated alias for his given name, Kuyumptiwa Kopavi Grok. His self-described style of something old, something new, something me, something you, is indicative of the fact that anyone can find his or her niche in his music. It is up to the interpreter to determine whether or not that description has been extracted from Buck's musical ascension in the Bay Area. Psychedelic or not, the music is intrinsically noble. Genre obsessed critics may pigeonhole Buck as strictly a house music producer, but connoisseurs will recognize his complex sound as more eclectic and fused, completely lacking the ability to be placed in a single category. Like many of the other artists influenced by the global music scene, Buck has made his mark as a DJ and as a producer and has been doing both for over a decade now. Having left behind his musical roots, Buck is enjoying Los Angeles and the opportunities it offers as a city. In some respects, it is simply one more environment to weld into the sound that he makes and plays. I really like the concept of fusing things together and seeing what happens, he says. One interpretation of dance music and the art of DJing is that it is freestyle in nature. Very few DJs show up at a venue knowing every track they will include in their set. Buck applies this theory not only to his live gigs but to his productions as well. DJ culture is showing up with a big pile of records, simplifies Buck. If you get to play a long set, you might get to play all the records in your box but usually you have to choose a handful. In a way, it's a very freestyle type of thing. That to me is reminiscent of jazz. In 1996, Buck, along with Little T and Graham Boothby, founded Leaf Recordings as an outlet for their eclectic mesh of sounds. Blending unusual house with persuasive percussion and the occasional perfect vocal, Buck has managed to create a hypnotic and unique blend of dance music. Having released countless original tracks on various labels, he has earned a well-deserved reputation that stretches far beyond the borders of his home states or familiar coasts. In reality, his success spans continents and remains most impressive due to the fact that throughout the years, he has managed to remain true to his influences and the sound that he has aimed to create. As an industry veteran, Buck has known Doc Martin, co-owner of L.A. staple Wax Records, for years. Upon making his transition from Northern to Southern California in 2001, it seemed only natural for him to supply a missing link in the rapidly growing multi-faceted venture that Wax encompasses. Along with Doc Martin, Juan Nuñez, Little Chris Pocino and Tony Watson, Buck is representing a group that is attempting to set the standard for quality house music in Los Angeles. From Amsterdam to Beijing to Jakarta, from The Hacienda to Ministry of Sound to Fabric, it is likely that Buck has accumulated his fair share of Sky Miles. More importantly, his talents and accolades are enabling him to be a part of the dance music scene worldwide. Perhaps the bedrock of Buck's success is built on his level of comfort behind the decks and naturally, his desire to make great music to be played. Only the man himself will ever know. At some point in the future, those outside the realm of dance music may also be enlightened. I definitely want to embrace all the parts of what the title of producer means, says Buck. I want to be all of that, not just a producer in a home studio putting out dance music; that's just one of the pieces, one of the steps. In keeping with the meaning of his true name, it appears that the badger has come over the mountain to total awareness. B |
