quick...
remeber when the rave scene was booming.......lets say in 1998... pretty much all those ravers were 16-18....which means that teh majority of vacnouver booming rave scene are now 20-22.....which means that having an event 19+ would probably draw a much larger attendance.....!!!! All of the big massive parties in toronto and montreal are now 19+ and always are packed.... I know alot of people that would go out if the party was 19+ and served some alcohool.....heck, even if it was 19+ and no alcohol i woudl go for sure... and finally, if it were 19+, maybe a company such as GoldclubSeries, Smirnoff, or Molson would sponsor such an event and then it wouldnt be $50 to get in.....it is beeing done all over the country, why not vancouver?????? Please Twisted, or whomever throws the next plaza masisve, get a bigger prog/trance name, get a DnB headliner, and then make it 19+ and open a bar......you would be set, and many many many people would be happy!. more to come later |

unforunately, as agroculture has already pointed out, even the revised liquor laws would not allow an event like this to be possible, especially at an all ages event like the ones twisted throw. The problem is that even the new liquor laws require clubs to close at 4am, not the 8am we're accostimed to. Without pressure from the general public or big buisness there is no incentive for the B.C government to change the liquor laws again. but even then the City of Vancouver is too afraid of loosing it's image as a safe and livable city for FAMILIES, to risk allowing all night events where liquor is present. Also there are no permited venues that are large enough to accomadate the type of crowd needed to throw a massive. the largest venue in Vancouver is the Commodore which has a capacity of around 1000. The city would be hesitant to allow anything that is larger because they are afraid of using up their considerable, and largely idle police resources to control rowdy crowds of partiers....Secondly we have to realize that Vancouver is a relatively small city, it has less then 2/3rds of the population of Montreal, and less then half the population of Toronto. Quite frankly, Vancouver dose not have a large enough population to support a large electronic music scene. Finally if we really want super clubs in Vancouver we'll have to wait until a large company is confident enough to risk their money building a superclub, while at the same time contending with the sizeable concerns of City Hall. also we have to realize that the civic party just elected is naive enough to cause doubt about vancouver's desire to host the winter olympics, even if people in vancouver want it, we won't get it now because our civic politicians are dumb enough to cause doubt in the minds of the IOC. and i mean shit, like should it be the city of vancouver's to decide? its not their capital but the provincal/federal governments. Governments who NEVER give money to municipal government, and the money that is gonna be spent to accomdate the games is money that won't be spent otherwise..all these people saying that it should be spent on healthcare are dumb, because if it won't get spent on the olympics it won't be spent at all, i mean shit the federal government hinted that if we get the olympics theyll even chip in for LRT down to the airport. To think of the unbeleiveable amount of advertising and good promotion, as wel capital investmentl it would give the city, its ridiculus..ahh i digress this is entirely a differnt matter then the topic at hand :)... Anyway when you look at the current owners of clubs the construction of a electronic music superclub simply is not going to happen. Only one company owns most of the larger clubs in vancouver, and they cater to the same mainstream top40 and hip hop loving audience that most electronic music fans despise. The only club i know of which regularly holds electronic music nights is Sonar which is a dope club, but im pretty sure it is owned by Tyler Stadius, a Dj himself, so basicly he's someone with a vested intrest in the popularity of dance music. though the fact clubs will be open till 4am gives me hope that a larger audience of electronic music fans will arise and increase demands for clubs that cater to their needs. Only then will the type of corporate intrest step in and give what most ravers want. heh, and all you anti-capitalist ravers that complain about how commercialization ruins the scene, Flame on, cause quite frankly only through commercialization will dance music in North America be anything more then a short lived fad associated with drug use. Good vibes may lead to great times, but they don't pay for dj's or sound equiptment rentals Last edited by SEAN!; Nov 26, 02 at 01:52 PM. |

Good luck on the party..... it is NYE so i'm sure it'll go fine. Honestly though. the only way to spend New Years is at a house party. Last year... house in east van, 200+ people, tables up stairs, downstairs, KEGS. Best NYE in a long time....
Now all we gotta figure out is who is gonna throw that party this year??? haha |

well, im just saying that dnb events at clubs have ben getting wicked tun-outs....dieselboy, amon tobin..all packed shows that were +19...
lotsa older people like prog, hence why sasha and diggers and etc are so damn popular but yah, house and breaks would work as well..just they always find there way to a plaza party |

Quite frankly, Vancouver dose not have a large enough population to support a large electronic music scene.
Thats not quite true. How many ppl were there at summerlove 2000? 13 000? I think thats enough. The electronic music club scene is very tiny compared to toronto and montreal. But i can see it building into something worthwhile maybe 3-4 years down the road. |

the reason the club scene is tiny beacuse there is now where to go......and no afterhours....
everyt other city has real clubs, with good mucis...it seems that there are only two types of clubs in this sity..massive jiggy top 40-hip hop clubs which are everywhere(aka atlantis, rihards, ozone)....and smaller classy clubs that play west coast house (shine, sonar, barnone, element).... the missing link is a big massive 2 room club with good hip-hop/breakbeats in one room, house/techno/tranc in the main huge room(were talking full on rave environment-lights sound etc) and then durring weekdays have dnb, breaks, other events!! when bc allows afterhours...yo know that this is gonna happen, just like every other city in canada |

kay time to let you in on the no show for spooky story .... I got there around 1 or 2 ish and they ran out of name tags for my guest so they gave her a braclet to go in, the people at the door wouldn't let her in because of overcapacity which is understandable, but had she a VIP tag she would've been inside
so they said wait for a bit and we'll squeeze her in , 40 minutes go by and she still isn't in so I go outside to see what the situation is, I say "why the hell can't my guest go inside with me , I feel bad with her sitting out her waiting for me" then I see one of the headliner DJ's show up and they let in his guests so I'm like "ok let her in you did the same for the other DJ" then some bald chinese guy says to me "you have 5 seconds to go in or your not going in" to which I reply " dude I'm supposed to play and my guest is out here fuckin freezing ...get her in!" then the bald chinese dude says " I'm the owner and your not going back in" then I say " OH SHIT" but Azim was still kind enough to pay me for showing up, next time I guess i'll hafta show up earlier c'est la vie |
