SPOOKY 9 FULL Line-Up! - Oct 30th
Swing Kids Entertainment and Twisted Productions are proud to present...
*** SPOOKY 9 *** VENUE: AT THE NEWLY FORMATTED PLAZA OF NATIONS! ROOM #1 - Trance / Hard House: LISA LASHES - UK, www.djlisalashes.co.uk DJ Lisa Lashes is hailed throughout the world as the undisputed Queen of Hard House . Lisa's tireless dedication to the hard style has made her not only a superstar in her native UK, but also the world's most popular female DJ. Lisa is the first and only female to be considered among the top ten DJs in the world by DJ Magazine , ranking ninth in 2000 and continuing as the top-ranking female DJ in 2001, 2002, and 2003. The Lisa Lashes mixed albums, Hard House Euphoria (2002) and Extreme Euphoria Vol. 2 (2003), also achieved the status of highest selling hard house compilations in the world. Most recently, Lisa conquered Ibiza with her own Lashed in Ibiza nights at Eden, packing in the crowds with her superb technical skills and explosive musical style. "Whatever style of house it is, I play it hard and dirty; it's my favourite way!" Lisa Lashes's first gig was at a boat party on the River Severn in 1996, where she was discovered by Madders ( Polysexual , formerly of Sundissential ) and quickly given her first residency. From there, Lisa added further residencies and regular club nights at the most prestigious clubs in the UK, including Base, Escape, Euphoria, Eat Your Words, Frantic, Fully Charged, Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Golden, Goodgreef, Hotdog, Koolwaters, Naughty But Nice, Progress, Radioactive, ROAR, Scream, Slinky, Storm, Temple Theatre, The Met, Tidy, and Transaction . Since 2000, Lisa has also headlined all of the top festivals -- Godskitchen Global Gathering, Homelands, Tidyweekender, Tidy Magna, Creamfields UK and Ireland, Homelands, Knebworth, Escape Into the Park, and Gatecrasher Summer Sound Systems --while at the same time playing numerous special events, including 2FM in Ireland, Godskitchen and Sundissential University Tours, Radio 1 - One Live in Nottingham, Radio 1 - One Live in Brighton . Lisa has as also displayed her ferocious skills in locales around the globe. She claimed another 'first' on the Slinky in Heineken Tour in China as the only female DJ to have played to a crowd of over 5,000 in that country. In South Africa, Lisa performed at sold-out shows of 12,000 in Cape Town and 20,000 in Johannesburg as part of the Camel Cigarettes Tour . Lisa has also toured the United States , Canada , and Australia , while making appearances in Brazil with Guess Clothing , Tenerife , and Corfu . One of Lisa's most important accomplishments in 2003 was the successful launch of Lashed in Ibiza www.lashedibiza.com For several years, Lisa has held residencies in Ibiza, the summer's hottest club location, playing Godskitchen , Judgement Sunday's , Slinky , and Tonic , to name a few. Lisa, however, wanted to create something completely unique, "to put the fun back into the party." For 15 weeks in summer 2003, Lisa did just that, bringing her furious brand of music to legions of grateful clubbers. For Lisa, "It has to be the most amazing project I have ever been involved with." The next stage involves bringing Lashed to an even greater global audience. To further this goal, Lisa has teamed with Nettwerk Management , whose international experience will help to cement Lisa Lashes as a top world DJ and Lashed as a premiere dance event. Beginning in 2004, Lashed will travel to China , Korea , Canada , New York City , Miami , Holland , Australia , New Zealand , and Japan . To all UK fans, however, Lisa says, "I'm not leaving anyone, because hard house and the stuff I play in the UK is still massive here, so there's no reason for me to go away. I just want to go abroad to show them our style." In fact, Lisa has already brought Lashed back home to the UK. In December of 2003, Lashed in Coalville was a sold-out event, and upcoming London and Liverpool shows in early 2004 promise to reach the same height of success - www.lasheduk.com It is impossible, however, for Lisa's talents to be constrained to DJing alone. She has produced Tidy's two biggest-ever selling hard house tracks, " Unbelievable " and " What Can You Do 4 Me ", along with " Lookin' Good " and "Dance 2 The House (Don't Go)" for Tidy, "We Came We Saw" for Sundissential, and "Give It All You've Got" for The Originator. In addition, Lisa's mixed albums for Tidy, Slinky, Mixmag, and Euphoria, which include a gold disc for Hard House Euphoria and a silver disc for Extreme Euphoria Vol. 2 , have been acclaimed by critics and embraced fans. Future releases include studio collaborations with BK , the biggest hard house producer in the world and many more! Rest assured that whatever Lisa Lashes does, she does it hard and dirty, it's her favourite way! M.I.K.E. PUSH - BELGIUM, www.mike.be M.I.K.E. is Mike Dierickx. Formerly known as Dirk Dierickx… He lives in Belgium around the area of Antwerp. In 2000 he decided to change his real name from Dirk to Mike. Mike quotes: "When I started to dj at the age of 16, i used the name Dj Mike as my artist name…later on it changed into my producers name M.I.K.E., and that's why I decided to make it my real name…" He produces under the name M.I.K.E. , and also started to DJ under this alias. M.I.K.E is releasing records under the guises; Solar Factor, M.I.K.E, The Blackmaster, Return Of The Native, Plastic Boy …and last but not least, Push. As a dj,Mike’s style is very similar to the music he makes, techy- edged on a progressive trance tip. M.I.K.E is at the forefront of Europe's new sound, regularly topping charts in several leading countries. The story began when an 11 year old boy discovered the potential of samplers and keyboards... A kid who preferred knobs and backlight displays instead of playing in kindergardens. At the age of 18, Mike handed his first demo tape to the Antwerp based record company, 'USA Import'. Shortly after, his first record, 'Vision Act' was released on the Atom label in 1992. Mike released a series of successful records before he signed up with Lightning back in 1996. M.I.K.E's reputation shot through the roof, and although a commercial crossover had never been anticipated, in 1998 'Universal Nation' took the world by storm, winning several dance awards, and undoubtedly being recognized as one of the classic dance-records of the trance era. Pole positions in the worldwide dance charts were soon putting the Belgian dance scene firmly on the map.His Push follow up single, 'Strange World', destroyed hundreds of clubs across Europe, in the same vein as 'Universal Nation'. This was followed by yet another blockbuster, 'The Legacy' once again topping all dance charts across Europe and entering the British National charts at #21. Over the years Mike received several music awards including best club singles and best dance-producer,and entered 6 times the national top 40 in the UK. Mike also teamed up and did rmxs for Sinead 'O Connor,Moby,Mauro Piccoto,Bom Funk Mc's,Oliver Lieb,Ian Van Dahl… This kind of success did not go unnoticed, as M.I.K.E. was asked to DJ at some of the best venues in the world, including: 'Gatecrasher' and 'Godskitchen' in the UK,'Fura' and 'Vel Farre' in Japan, 'Massive and 'Trance Energy' in Holland,'Limelight' U.S. and the Berlin Love Parade…are a few to mention… In 1999 he decided to start-up his own label, and Scanner-Records was born… The music stands for minimal electric dance. Scanner got a backup from the likes of Steve Lawler,Marco V,Timo Maas... More info can be found on www.scanner-records.be Recently Mike teamed up for a fashionable new imprint called “Club Elite “ with Armada Music. 4 releases a year…with a close eye to the seasons. More info info can be found on www.club-elite-records.com And with the dawn of the progressive Tech and Trance era, you can expect to see M.I.K.E at the very front, leading the way. ALPHAZONE aka. Skywarp - GERMANY, www.skywarp.de The two heads behind Skywarp, the producers of wellknown trance projects like Alphazone, DJ Kim, Saltwater and Nebulus, are Alexander Zwarg and Arne Reichelt. They are in producing dancefloor approved clubmusic in their own studio since 1995. The past two years they have continously built their reputation as trance maniacs and now sail on a big and steady growing wave of support. Skywarp productions took their place in record bags and boxes of many superstar djs quickly and many labels trust the overwhelming power of a Skywarp remix for their big and coming releases. Besides their studio work Alex and Arne have been busy on the dj front since the beginning, but in 2001 they decided to take a break and focus on studio work to improve their productions skills. Since autumn 2003, they are back behind the decks and are going to rock dancefloors all around europe with their massive hi-nrg trance sets in the future. Be prepared! While Arne collected his first experiences with electronic dance music in the early nineties, Alex joined his passion in 1995. Thanks to his technical understanding of synthesizers and samplers, it was Alex -a former student of telecommunication- who made it possible for both of them to start producing techno and dancemusic in an own little studio at home. With the time their studio grew bigger and bigger, and also their production standards and mixing skills. They decided to create a small enterprise and start producing on a more professional level. Their first official release was "Overload" in 1996. After having released some progressive stuff on various labels till 1999, they decided to give their sound a more trancy, melodic feel in 2000. Finally the remix of DJ Kim's "Jetlag" in 2001 -which was a smashing floorburner all across europe- was the initial success for their continuous work: the Alphazone sound was born. In Spring 2002 they released their first Alphazone vinyl "Stay" on Waterworld Records in Germany. With a rolling baseline, a bumping kick, tremendous acid feel and an exstatic synth hook they created a huge anthem, often played and well known in the entire hardtrance scene. Between, "Alphazone" remixed projects like Ian Van Dahl, Kira, Dave Joy, Jay Walker and BK. While these singles already took their place in record-cases of many international dj stars, Alphazone kept working in the studio, because there were still many big things to come in 2003. In April they released "Saltwater - The Legacy" (together with the producers of Norman Bass), which had a much trancier approach then the other Alphazone mixes, but nevertheless got impressive support from all the bigh trance jocks like Tiesto, Ferry and Gielen. Some weeks later they released their Alphazone follow-up single "Rockin" on Waterworld Records. Including an ingenious Mat Silver & Tony Burt Remix, which received highest reviews everywhere, this single took of the roof from every club around. In summer 2003 Arne and Alex moved with their studio to a new location and they had to spend the coming months to get everything working again. Back on the track in August 2003, the hardtrance community saw a successful release of the latest DJ Kim single “Time And Space” with an Alphazone Mix on the a-side. But don’t believe the year is already over: For 2003 there a still some surprises to come... The debut singles of two completely new projects are still in the line. Watch out for Celyion and Nebulus, the story continues... RANK 1 - HOLLAND, www.rank-1.com The story started around 1997 when Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij met each other at a party. Piet already was into music and DJ'ing and had his own studio at the time. This sounded very interesting to Benno, who had no experience at all in producing. Benno already had a perfect ear for good melodies, due to his classical musical background by playing the piano and the keyboard. They decided to cooperate and the first releases as Pedro & Benno soon followed. After many successes under different artist name’s, the name Rank 1 was born in 1998, as a joke. They thought it would be nice to see this name at a number 1 position! But the joke became reality when 'Airwave' hit numerous charts at that position. After this they had many successes like their remix of Cygnus X's 'Superstring' , the Sensation theme of 2000. Their next single 'Such Is Life' became next years Sensation anthem, was released in July 2001 and climbed the charts with the speed of light. The album Symsonic, on which Piet and Benno demonstrated their variety, is not just an album for the dancefloor but one to listen to at home as well. Also a DVD with their live performance at Trance Energy 2002 is included along with their video’s. Soon after this release their single ‘Awakening’ hit the European charts. The year 2003 was a busy year for them. Breathing was re-released, it was an updated version of Airwave, with a breakbeat remix. Afterwards they spent 6 months building their new studio’s which can be viewed on the webcam! They also started a side-project for a friend: ‘MAC J’. Nowadays the guys are working on a their second album. Rank 1 has a very tight schedule. In the weekends Piet is travelling around the world for the Rank 1 DJ-sets. Meanwhile Benno is creating new sounds. So when they meet up during the week they have lots inspiration for new records to come! When it comes to interviews, Rank 1 is mostly reluctant to get into details. They rather let their music speak for itself, since they consider themselves as ordinary guys. With a lot of musical talent that is… With locals... Azim - Twisted, Swing Kids Tazix - Twisted, Swing Kids Danny Taylor - Ascention, Viva ROOM #2 - Breaks / DnB: SKOOL OF THOUGHT - UK, Against the Grain / Supercharged - www.superchargedmusic.com Even though he started DJ’ing at age thirteen, it’s been within the past seven years that Lloyd Seymour aka. Skool of Thought, has really made a name for himself in the Breakbeat scene – First as DJ and promoter and more recently, as the head honcho for the giant Breakbeat record labels Supercharged and Against the Grain along side Krafty Kuts. Both labels started with overwhelming success and have since earned themselves formidable reputations. This reputation was acknowledged at the 2003 Breakspoll Awards, where Supercharged won Best New Label, and Raw As F**k (aka. The Freestylers, signed to Against The Grain) won Best New Act, a fitting recognition of all the hard work and effort put in by Lloyd and Martin. Whilst busy balancing running the two labels, Lloyd hasn’t let his DJ’ing and production work slip either. Skool of Thought has always championed the tougher end of Breaks with his chunky yet funky style, and his new compilation Heavy Weight Breaks III due out in November, doesn’t disappoint! It features two new tracks from Skool of Thought himself entitled “Funky Town” and “The Devil.” Some other remixes of his you’ve heard cained locally have included “Superstylin” and “Fight for Your Right” dropped by virtually anyone playing Breaks today. It’s been nearly two years since Lloyd was last here and a lot has happened for him since then, so let’s welcome Lloyd back to Vancouver as no doubt he has a TON of fresh material to lay down this Halloween! A. SKILLZ - UK, Fingerlickin – www.fingerlickin.co.uk Adam “A.Skillz” is one of Sussex’s most talented beatmeisters. At just 23 years of age, Adam has been producing music and DJ’ing for more than 5 years and has fast gained a reputation for himself as a studio wizard, musical maestro and tantalizing turntablist. -- His incredible deck talents involve fusing funk, hip-hop and breaks with his own style of highly innovative scratching and sampling, which have won him prime-time slots across the UK. Skillz has also been a busy boy in the studio with his impeccable engineering talents being utilised by high profile labels such as Defunked, Arista, Curious Records and Planet Funk. He also co-produced the flip to the UK No.1 smash hit "Breathe" by Blu Cantrell with fellow producers Ed Funk & D Rok, as well as "Feel The Love" with Funk n' Flex. Adam has also mixed and engineered compilations for the UK's leading dance music magazine Mixmag, and has written and produced tracks for pop groups T-Girl and Tribe. Let’s also not forget that most recently, Mr. Skillz had been working in the studio with Krafty Kuts, producing the highly successful album "Tricka Technology". With a nod towards De La Soul, Ugly Duckling, Gorillaz and Jurassic 5, it is true Finger Lickin' Funk, and the future certainly looks bright for what these two have to offer! With the new record Insane Bangers 2, a new CD coming out soon and being one of the only artists to have to tracks commissioned for the forthcoming Grand Tursimo 4 game on Playstation, it’s clear we just can’t get enough of what A. Skillz has to offer! This is Adam’s first ever visit to Canada and knowing how this city loves funk, we look forward to having him show us some amazing Skillz! TOTAL SCIENCE - UK, CIA / Advanced / Metalheadz / Contagious Musiq -- The Good Game Album Release Tour Total Science are Jason Greenhalgh (Q Project) & Paul Smith (Spinback) who first met in 1987, both living in and around the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England. Distracted by the arrival of hardcore in the early nineties, record collecting was quickly followed by DJ’ing and eventually production. Greenhalgh was the first into the studio, with "Freestyle Fanatic" launching his career in 1991. However it was the establishment of the Legend imprint and specifically Greenhalgh’s "Champion Sound", which really took their profile above and beyond the slew of anonymous white labels that were dominating the music at the time. Moving forward to 1994, the two started recording together under the name Funky Technicians, with "Got to Believe" the first in a series of records. After six years of recording singles for Legend and others, the pair established the CIA label and changed their name to the now familiar Total Science guise in the closing months of 1997, with the help of Brillo from Timeless. The release of their Silent Reign EP for Goldie's Metalheadz breathed a new lease of life into the project, and the pair achieved a further boost with a well-timed Bad Company remix of "Champion Sound" which conjured further interest in what they were doing with their own label. Their debut album Advance exposed a further field of interest, with down-tempo experiments logged as a series of "Breaks" on the majority of their early EP's extended to some superb deep house, this breadth was taken a step further with their Skin Deep imprint which has forged broken beat to considerable acclaim. During 2001, a heavy amount of remix work of old-skool tracks (i.e “Dublate”, “NHS”, “Hardcore Jungilism”, “Jazz Note”) furthered the movement that the duo championed. After this followed releases on high-profile labels such as 31 Records, True Playaz, Reinforced and Soul:r. 2000 saw the founding of CIA’s sister label Advanced, created as a means to keep up with the high level of production output from the duo and their confederates, for which one label was no longer enough. Following from this came the renowned Sektor series on Advanced. Initially created as a way of combining up-and coming artists with those more established, the series was also developed as a means to stress the importance more on the music than the artists. Featuring artists such as Baron, Digital, D.kay, Lee, Juju, Beta 2 and Klute, the Sektor series included seminal tracks such as “Squash”, and the ever popular “Champion Sound” remix. This series continues to prove it's popularity by sales and reputation, with several new volumes added each year. 2004 begins with a new studio set up, allowing the duo to up the ante on output and quality, with releases on CIA & Advanced, including No. 1 Sound, A.C.I & Voices and a return to Metalheadz with Defcom 69/Loose Ends. In the true Total Science fashion of never binding oneself to one particular musical form, liquid-style releases are also due out on Creative Source & Defunked. Further into the year there are plans for a re-launch of the currently dormant Skin Deep imprint, a hip-hop/modern soul album (currently in production) planned for release later in the year and several other projects in the works. With such a vast array of styles and concepts originated by Total Science over the past ten years, one can only guess what the future holds for this highly talented duo, except to say that surprises will always be expected!
