IVANA SANTILLI - tonight
http://www.spectrum-events.com
Next Monday, April 22nd at Sonar IVANA SANTILLI plus her live band formerly of BASS iS BASE $12 door only Ivana is currently writing and recording material for her sophomore album, due Summer 2002. She has been collaborating with acclaimed Philly-based producer King Britt (Sylk 130 Scuba) and Stuart Matthewman (Sade, Sweetback, Maxwell) as well as Toronto beat-makers Solitair (Choclair, Kardinal) and Ajile (Brassmunk). ivana santilli - b i o “You’re a very complete and lovely musician with nice things to say and beautiful ways of saying them. Your voice is very rich and interesting…you’re a very intimate and warm singer” - Bob Power High praise indeed, and even more noteworthy when you consider the kudos came from the acclaimed producer who’s worked with D’Angelo, de la Soul, The Roots, Me’Shell N’Degeocello, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest to name a few. That Ivana Santilli “has a beautiful way” of doing what she does on stage – playing keys, trumpet and singing – isn’t news to anyone who’s seen her perform countless shows with her award-winning group Bass is Base (A&M/Island), opening for acts like Jamiroquai, James Brown and The Fugees during their three-year existence. Sincerity, soul and class always shine through whenever this classically trained pianist leans into the mic, tickled the ivories or raises the horn to her lips. After leaving Bass is Base, Santilli went to work on original material towards her solo debut. It’s these songs that Power raved about and the same songs which drew similar praise from The Brand New Heavies, The Roots, and Tito Puente, all of whom she has recently shared a stage with. With much of today’s “canned music” Ivana Santilli is a refreshing change. Her appeal truly international, her style of soul-edged pop clearly ageless, a true artist in every sense of the word. “Anywhere there is a strong song and just plain good music, you’ll find my influences” says the striking, multilingual Toronto-based artist. “Anywhere between Earth, Wind & Fire to Led Zeppelin and Tears For Fears to Antonio Carlos Jobim”. It’s these myriad influences that Santilli weaves into sunny, optimistic songs. On Ivana’s solo debut, “Brown”, her penchant for combining beautiful music with thoughtful lyrics takes the listener through the varied mix of her influences; soul, jazz, R&B, latin, drum & bass, even touching upon her French/Italian heritage. Her insightful lyrics reflect her growth emotionally and spiritually. From insecurity in her newfound status as a solo performer (It May Take Awhile), her promise to put the past behind her but never forget (Never Again), to a life-belief that balance is the key to happiness (Sun+Moon=Tomorrow) ivana santilli Fact Sheet Heritage: Heritage French-Canadian/Italian Languages Spoken: Languages English/French/Italian Occupation: Singer/Songwriter/Composer/Musician Instruments: Instruments Vocals, Keys, Trumpet Discography: Discography First Impressions for The Bottom Jigglers - Bass is Base (Independent), 1994 Memories of the Soulshack Survivors - Bass is Base (A&M/Island), 1995 Brown - Ivana Santilli (Brown), 1999 Highlights: Awards 1994 Juno Award – Best Soul/R&B Award First Impressions for The Bottom Jigglers - Bass is Base 1994 MuchMusic Video Award – Best R&B Video Funkmobile - Bass is Base 1996 MuchMusic Video Award – Best R&B Video Diamond Dreams - Bass is Base 1999 Canadian Urban Music Industry Awards – Best Album Brown - Ivana Santilli 1999 MuchMusic Video Awards 3 Nominations: Best Soul/R&B, Best Dance, Best Independent Sun+Moon=Tomorrow - Ivana Santilli 2000 Juno Awards 2 Nominations: Best Soul/R&B Album and Best New Solo Artist Brown - Ivana Santilli Kudos: Kudos **** (out of 5) Access Magazine – March 1999 “Canadian music has never sounded so seductive and rarely does R&B and Soul in general, sound this inventive.” Exclaim!
