"The Big One"
So, its 2006, who thinks "The Big One" will hit Vancouver this year? Apperantly its quite the posibility according to the Discovery Channel.
Imagine a 9.0 earthquake followed by a tsunami? Would there be enough time for an evacuation, or would it be kaos and destruction? |

Yeah no more Vancouver Island, they'd be shit out of luck. Apperantly its suppossed to be a 9.0 quake. I'm thinking what would be happening to the homes in N. Van. imagine them all at the bottom of marine Dr. in a huge pile of rubble. All those buildings crushing down downtown, it be alot of koas and destruction. People would be looting, raping, shooting guns off, it be absolute koas. Kinda like in New Orleas after Katrina.

in the odd event that an earthquake occurs RIGHT under vancouver, yeah.. alot of teh old buildings would be screwed, and its spelled "chaos". if it happened more over by the island (talkin about a 9), i think the hawaiians would suffer more than we would, tsunami waves would devestate all those smaller islands.
this is quite the interesting thread, it is true that the northwest hasnt been hit by a major earthquake in a long while, basically.. were due for one. earthquakes usually result in the shifting or settling of tectonic plates underneath the earths crust, earthquakes occur most often where two of these plates meet, check out where we stand http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/952/tectonic5bj.png estimated death toll IF an earthquake hit the northwest: 1.2 million edit: added my own version http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/2...ctonic28wq.jpg Last edited by ja_raul; Jan 09, 06 at 05:14 AM. |

I think that one show on discovery said we get a whole of 15 mins. sooo yah how fast can you run up hill? I'm just glad I live up in Lynn valley. That’s high enough right? God I hope so. But I'm nervous about the whole Hawaii thing. I'm going to be there in April.
I wonder if there is an emergency preparedness place you can go to, to see where they have actually mapped out possible areas that are good places to go for emergencies. like if a tsunami hit where is high enough ground. |

it would suck if it happened close to the winter olympics...
i'm sure if "the big one" was coming, scientists would hopefully be able to give us a timeframe of when, like within the next week, or tomorrow, not 'sometime in the next decade". damage wize...i thought most highrises in the city are earthquake proof? that doesn't mean there would be zero damage, but a lot less i would image. most houses would totally collapse though... the only thing im really worried about is if one did happen, i don't want any of my friends or family getting trapped somewhere in the rubble and dying. that would be horrible. |

WEll if it does hit to create a tsunami at least im remotly safe where i am cause to get me the water has to go over the port alberni mountians and those things are massive and fully of lakes to trap most of the water. However the 9.0 earthquake would destroy most of this island. Vancouver would be pretty destroyed as well all the undergeround gas mains and electric everywhere plus the massive buildings falling. Hopefully it doesnt happen anytime soon tho.

Could you imagine the chaos if it did happen. It be like a scene out of a Hollywood movie. Building crummbling power lines/trees down, asphalt crucked, raods destroyed, gas pipes blown, water every where, people panicing and loting, dead bodies everywhere, just alot of chaos and destruction. I wonder if 2006 is the year it happens? I hope not I'll be working in a hospital and that would not be fun to experiance.
