If you're thinking about going in August you'll just be catching the tail end of hurricane season.
I would recommend dropping the extra bucks and getting travel insurance
A couple years ago, I went to Mexico in August and a hurricane blew in washing out the roads and doing a ton of damage. And while I'm super thankful that myself and the others I was there with weren't injured, I was more thankful for the fact that we had gone out and gotten insurance before hand. Our one week vacation turned into two and a half, and thanks to having insurance it was all paid for (food accomadations EVERYTHING) Especially because you're going right at the last little bit of it : you never know what's going to happen.
Bring lots of cotton shirts, shorts etc with you. The weather in August is so humid that you wont have to iron any of your clothes (a definate advantage!)
and if you can I would also suggest doing a bit of fake and baking before you go to give yourself a good base tan. That will stop you from burning yourself to a crisp the minute you walk off the plane.
