And after reading the article, yeah, it's just another tracker file format.

It's not a followup to mp3s, it's a followup to .MODs, which were the compression format used before MP3s came about. There have been plenty of others that have come since (8-track MOD, MTM, S3M, XM, IT) but honestly they're a pain to encode and not very versatile.

You're more likely to see GarageBand or Ableton tracks released a la Trent Reznor/Radiohead than to see this pick up anytime soon.
