I was told the following info from a TA in one of my psyc classes.

Apparently the W.H.O. (world health organization) conducted a study in 5 major cities across the globe, Vancouver being one of them. The guy that my TA was studying under while getting his doctorate has an extensive background in addictions couselling and a doctorate in psychology. He was chosen to head the study in the Vancouver area. The results were relativly consistent in all the cities around the world and they were as follows...

80% of those who use cocain use it recreationally
10% use it heavily
10% are addicted

I know your all going to come at me with examples of friends whos lives have been ruined. Before you start, I agree that it can do awful things, I've seen it myself. But most people have no idea the amount of people who do it on an occational basis.

So statements like "before you do it, kill yourself" aren't really fair, there are people who can control their drug use. I'm not defending coke heads, I'm simply presenting the informationt that I've come across.

On a side note, I don't do coke, never have and I don't plan on it. So I'm not just trying to justify my drug use.

^^^yeah... one of my former criminology profs was a lawyer for 25 years prior to teaching.

she would tell us stories about the large amount of judges and lawyers who use cocaine and were alcoholics. but no one ever knew...

quite amusing actually...

Most opinions formed are from personal experiences so they sometime do get put at one extreme or the other.

My lawyer told me he does cocaine to keep him "sharp" while in court. Others like him do it as well, but DO NOT classify different types of drugs as white collar or blue collar, for rich people or for poor. They are one and the same. Drugs don't care about your race, your sex or your wealth.

I do E and I can walk away from it, other do it and they are hooked. Some drugs are like this and are people dependant.

Other drugs like crack are different. My relative is in the Vancouver Police and he took drug training as part of his education. He tells me that once the fumes from the rock are inhaled and it hits the brain, that the brain chemistry is permanently altered to crave for the drug.

He DID NOT say that it causes brain damage, he said it alters the brain in such a way that is wants more. The same goes for heroin and smoking opium.

Now that I have seen the effects of crack first hand through people I know I can see the damage this type of drug can do.

No drug use is justifiable. One just has to accept the consequences for their decision to start taking it in the first place.

I give no pity towards those that blame others for their drug problems.

he's right.

cocaine acts in such a way that it prevents the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. because of this, the release of the neurotransmitters are prolonged and the dopamine accumulates in the synaptic cleft. because it gets washed away before the neuron can create more, it sends a negative feedback loop that tells your brain to create less dopamine. that's why the comedown from coke is so harsh and depressing.

after a long time, your brain releases even less dopamine and more of another transmitter that counteracts coke's reinforcing properties... that's what causes one's tolerance to develop and why a person needs to increase the frequency or dosage of coke to get the same high.

I've done it lots in the past...not hooked, just regularly, like once every week or two...and for some reason I was never really (and I'm sure some ppl will argue this) addicted to it, despite the amount I did...I never felt "I have to have this", etc...it was just around a lot with a couple of peep I hung out with...when I stopped doing it cuz I stopped hanging out with them as much I never really missed it...but yeah, it can be a fun way to kill some time...only thing that sucked was the inevitable end of night fiending fr more...

it's alright

i wouldn't reccommend it for anyone who has an 'addictive' personallity, if you're prone to develop habits with other drugs, i'd definitely stay away as it's probably the most easily habit-forming drug. you will want more, and more.

it doesn't have that affect on everyone though, contrary to what some ppl say. I used to use it about 1ce every week or 2 . . then i quit because i got bored of it, and it made it impossible to get a good night's rest afterwards. i value my sleep.

no withdrawl symptoms or anything, i don't miss it, and when friends do it now i have no problem saying 'no'. So, if you feel like you have good willpower, i'd try some . . it can be a lot of fun:284: just don't let it take over. oh, and try to get some quality stuff, nothin worse than bad char . .

I use to do it with my friend who sold a shit load of it but he got way to addicted and busted for possesion...So i decided to stop while i still could i even had to stop drinking because that's when i wanted to do it. Anyone who wants to do it don't it's pointless and destructive.
And anyone who braggs about doing it is a FUCKING GEEK who probably just started but won't be bragging after flailing away your whole paychek with nothing to show but a new addiction.
