how are rats as pets?? when i was like 15 my friends wanted to buy me a rat for my birthday..my mom freaked out...

They are awesome! I have five of them (wanted two, turned into an adoption agency), and they never cease to fascinate me. They all have their own distinct personality and are always up to something cool. Two of them are pretty sketchy around people so they don't come out much, but they are also the construction guys that constantly make beds for everyone with newspaper and anything else I give them. One is a bit of a runt, and if he's calm enough he'll just sit on your chest nestled under your hand. The other two are damn near dogs. When I come up to the cage they run up to the door to see what I'm doing there, and I play little games with them all the time.

But they do tend to freak out those that watch too many movies.

Aww, man, I love rats. They are the best pets!

I've been an off and on rat owner for over 12 years, at least.

My last one died in the summer. A grey Rex with respatory problems. Lived way longer then anyone (myself included) thought he would.

There's all the proof anyone needs that rats are intelligent.

I've been over at people's houses where they've had rats. Always fun, especially if they take them out. You can pass the rat between people by leaning together. The rat will walk over to the other person and probably start to explore their shirt!

Yeah, my Gordon was a total lech. He would always try to scurry down the shirts of nearby females.

He was such a good boy, often suceeding where I would fail.

As to Mr. Dave's question, he was born with it, but his wierd wheezing and such were so cute, I had to have him anyway.
