an electric starts at $300 and small amp wll set you back $150

fender makes great starter kits for beginners called "strat packs"

with a guitar and amp and cables for $395

decent yamaha at Costco.. around $100 maybe a bit less, i cant remember. comes with case and extra strings

its made with Maple top, and mahogany back.
2 volume, 2 tone, 3-way switch.

Im thinking of selling it for $1200. But i dont know. I love it and all.. but its too fuckin heavy.

There is a great second hand guitar shop above Backline Rentals http://www.backline.com/index.html

I picked up a nice Fender clone there; the guitar tech who works upstairs swaped out all the cheap wiring, pick-ups, tuning heads, and bridges, and put in quality components, so for $400 I got a really nice Fender with vintage Fender Strat 1957 pick-ups, it sounds and plays great. I liked it so much I brought my other Fender in (a Les Paul copy, heavy as hell) and we went to town on it, put in a set of Zakk Wylde EMG active Pick-ups, Schaller heads, all new wiring and pots, the thing totally rips now.

Anyway, they had a nice selection of acoustic guitars and great pricing. You should check them out.
