meh this vista crap ain't all hype..

try a leaked/demo version of it you'll see, mad compatibility issues with new regulations and BS

if you have firefox you barely have to worry about spyware crap anyway. with IE I had to flush my system of that shit like every week, now I wait like a month and run it and it barely finds 1 or 2 things.

Id still do it if I was gettin a big discount , I got a discount on mine that's why I got it.

as long as you aren't an idiot PC user and get good specs (which is impossible not to these days) you'll be fine.

I dno I found their cust. support to be good, this dude stayed on the phone for like an hour fixing my reformat issue when I tried to dual partition my drives and found out dell's can't (couldn't? ) do that and royally fuct everything lol. oh that's another thing, I wonder if dell has changed htat...... pretty wack if you ask me.

I will tell you why. That agent your talking to gets to do nothing but browse the internet and put his feet up on the desk for that hour. Did you guys have to reformat it?

P.S. You can partition the hell out of any standard HDD. I think Dell uses like Seagate?

Yeah I know what the cust. support game is all about, I used to do tech support for HP

basically I was reformatting, tried to dual partition, find out half way through it can't do that.. and just goes bonkers.. and we had to go through like an hour of typing in commands/codes to fix it before I could get the reformat goin.. friggin retarded.

Another way to get help on a Dell is thru other users on their forums which are excellent. They are also a way to get info before you buy one of their comps or monitors etc, to check if anyone else has tried those items you might be buying.

Toshiba has no such user forums so it's only the official support from them.

And re the extended warranty, nobodys expecting a manufacturer to replace a stolen computer, but obviously if your computer is stolen they won't be doing any repairs on a swiped machine. So they could afford to swap the warranty over to a new computer you might buy.

people talk a bunch of shit. what they should be telling you is that if ur buying a laptop jsut stay away from hp/compaq.

i got a dell Inspiron 8600 two years ago. Great computer and shes held up great for the last two years. Make sure you get it with xp pro so the windows doesnt come bundeled with a bunch of shit, and so if you formatt your computer you can pick and choose what to install, that way you only have to run what ya need.

a laptop is more than jsut whats inside it, its the shell and the hardware attached to it. Dell has done a good job with notebooks to make a durable product with external hardware that works well.

Dude, my computer got stolen..it is not a funny situation to be in so stfu. When you have the latest HP P4 with 19" LCD jacked...you'd be pissed. So for the extra precautions (with the addition of a new security system), I bought myself a nice P3 1GHZ and some other things a 19" old school monitor, and the package comes with all Xp bundle! I paid $100, and this computer is not stolen. I need this computer for school, and not for gaming.

Back on topic...the majority of users I find who have experienced Dell say it is a no-go. I say if you get a good discount on it, it does not hurt if you buy it..just be aware that if that computer falls apart on you, who is going to fix it for you? :mexitoke:

I will agree with you on Compaq, but I will disagree with you on HP. My sister owned her HP for 3 years now, and still no problems. Of course she is not on it 24-7, so guaranteed her computer will last at least 10 years. I have heard more good things about HP than Dell, but I am not here to stereotype on Dell's reliability on performance. Buy whatever you want...if it is in your budget and if you don't care about brand name. :)

I've had 3 dell laptops over the past 5 years bought for me through work. We always buy the 3 year drop warranty because I used to use them in really rugged environments such as forklift maintenance bays. I can tell you that while I hated actually using them (mostly due to their weight) I've never had any problems with them except for a break here and there due to using them in a shitty environment which was taken care of quickly through the warranty. They aren't bad, especially if you get a decent discount.

With that said I just bought myself a mac book pro :)

Some Hp books are good.

compaq=HP though. its the same company, they have been merged for years. I useto work as a tech for HP (as did a few other ppl on this board) and All i can say is I was not impressed with them at all. Iv owned lots of Dells and had nothing but good experiances with them.

Iv never cheaped out and bought a crap Dell system though. most people that complain are their Dell have bought the bargain basment slop job computers. They suck for a reason, they were made cheaply to fit a cheap budget. If you invest in a higher end Dell you will be saticefied with your purchase.

If your buying a desktop and you decide to go with an $800 system with an onboard gfx card etc... well you did it to yoruself, you payed for junk, and dell gave you junk. dont complain, you knwe the specs and hardware when you made the purchase.

We sold a similar Gateway tablet to that one you're looking at, and the computer itself worked great, but the pen that comes with it kept dieing. So, I'd make sure to get an extra pen.

Also, if you're going to be packing it around and using it as a tablet a lot, that notebook is hella heavy. The thing weighed closed to 7.5lbs, which isn't ideal as a tablet. If that's the primary purpose, then you should look at something from Fujitsu. They've got 12" and 8.9" tablets available, although not quite with the specs that the Gateway one has.

If you still have problems with your wireless, let me know, I'll get it working for you. Unless it's a weekend or I'm working, I'm pretty much sitting at home doing nothing anyways, so it's no big deal.
