Creating MP3 ringtones for a cellmaphone?

Okay...I'm not normally a tool when it comes to technology, and this is probably a stupid question.

My dad just got a new phone (Sony Ericsson Z710, which is better than MY p.o.s. phone), and it has the MP3 ringtone feature in it. He wants to be able to use his music as a ringtone. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Do I need a special program?

Fido has disabled alot of the useful functionality of the phone, including BT file transfers except for handsfree and headset profiles. Also all mp3's have some kind of drm.

Where as if he bought the UNLOCKED phone (more expensive than the subsidized prices that cell companies provide) he would have no problem.

You don't. If its a Fido branded phone its too late. You need to buy an unlocked untouched unbranded phone.

She'll have to have the fido firmware reflashed to the original. Or find some drm wrapper. Fido locked the mp3 ringtone feature.

on my phone i just transferd an mp3 to my phone and used that. however, the ringer option usually limits you to a 30 second sample which is what i used.

Use Nero (yes the cd/dvd burning program). You must have a slightly newer version though. In the pogram theres a misc sort of tab that has a function to cut songs. Take your music and cut out the parts of songs you want. Save whatever u cut into mp3 format (you can choose the format in the options). Then just transfer that file to your phone via data cable or BT dongle. The program is straight forward to use.

^ what do you do once you transfer it? I can do the transfer, but then will you be able to just select the mp3 in your ringtones section?
