This thread is bound to get some interesting responses around here.

Genuinely interested in pagan traditions or looking to cast a spell on that cutie you have your eye on?

What's your source?

Old-country has always been referred to the united kingdom, typically Ireland as it's one of the only few remnants of the old world before the last great deluge.

Though old-country is also a term for the heritage of one's ancestral home.

Anyways, superstition and witchcraft are inseparable, but the astute student of any magical background won't fall for such trivial omens without any tangible leads.

It depends on who you ask what witchcraft is. If you ask an orthodox christian, they might tell you what has been beaten into the public from times of the inquisition and say it's a religion devoted to the worship of Lucifer. Witch comes from the old-english word wicca, which contrary to popular belief actually depicts a man who practices magic. In the middle ages the term was of common gender. According to the Malleus Maleficarum, witches were anthropophagists.

Anyways to your matter at hand, the fact your gf believes she has some sort of hex put on her but is unfamiliar with the details seems to be a sign that she is privy to believe superstition rather than an actual supernatural phenomenon. Press her more on why she believes this omen, and never forget about the law of attraction and thoughtforms. Just by believing this she may be causing herself more problems than what she is suspecting. Besides that, if she is really paranoid get her to do a binding spell with a piece of rope using the green thread in question.

If there's more you wanna know don't fret to ask.

my source? i guess i'd have to say that my source would be hearing it from people who were from eastern europe and movies. i've never heard somebody from the UK call their home "the old country".

to me, and my orthodox signnificant other, a person who practices, or dabbles, in areas that are outside of mundane sciences are people who practice in witchcraft. as far as i know (and i've read a little on this) the inquisition was a catholic institution created by dominic somethingorother and their influence didn't extend as far as the ex-yugoslavia. to me (but not ivana, my girlfriend) wiccans are a whole different breed than "witches", and they tend to be more "spritual" than your conventional witch. i think a witch is somebody who use charms and curses on a person.

her grandmother practiced magic when she was alive (the grandmother, not ivana, lol) and that has had some infulence, i'm sure, on what she believes nowadays. i'm aware of "self fullfilling prophecies" and if i really wanted i could rub that out of her mind. we're not sure of what a binding spell is...what is that?

Yes its a term that's pretty much interchangable with motherland, which is how any eastern european would use the term. Go to England or Ireland and ask any locals what the old-country is and you'll see plenty of folks who call their home the old country.

If it weren't for the inquisition, (the Catholic tribunal charged with exposing and punishing religious unorthodoxy [their version of unorthodoxy I might add]) not one person would have died for witchcraft as we know of through witch hunts. All later trails, secular and ecclesiastical, Protestant or Catholic, stem from early inquisitorial patterns, culminating in the Bull of 1484 of Pope Innocent VIII. When Christianity became the state church of the roman empire, the new religion extended the intolerance to which hitherto it had been subjected. By A.D. 430 the civil code was odering death for heresy, although such laws were not rigorously enforced until many centuries later.

Pope Gregory IX in 1233 proclaimed that the "inquisitores hereticae pravitatis" were henceforth to be Dominicans, appointed by and subject only to the pope. Their headquarters were the local Dominican (or sometimes Franciscan) monastery.

In short, the inquisition emerged about 1200 because of the mounting insecurity, weakness, and immorality of the Roman Church, manifested by the apostasy of the most civilized parts of Europe, especially sothern France and the rich cities of central France and the Rhineland.

Anyways, I consider the Wicca as witchcraft for dumbies. The average wiccan is poorly educated on metaphysics and seems to be obsessively engaged into goddess worship and feminine thoughtforms. For instance, the biggest festival of the year, Samhain, is poorly known to any wiccans I've encountered. Many don't know its of Druidic origin, which involves Saman, the druid lord of Death, who at this time summons the souls of evil men who had been condemned to dwell in animal bodies.

Your definition of a witch is pretty ample and to the point, but well more could apply.

A binding ritual is also known as "tying knots". Knots - whether of multicolored threads, plant stems, animal hair or whatever, are used generally to remove a spell (what Ivana wants to do I assume) or disease, and is relatively simple to do. The adepts of Egypt believed that a magic knot was the point of convergence of the forces that unite the divine and the human worlds.

Knots are still central to magic ritual. It's simple, get a piece of rope, one that you consecrated, and tie 9 knots into it, having said a rhyming couplet for each knot, the 9th sealing the rite (you could for instance put the green thread into the 9th knot thereby binding it, but let her do what feels right).

Further variants of such spells are carried on by untying the knots, one at a time, over a period of nine days, or by tying the knotted cord into a circle.

Hope that helps.

And yeah "Old Country" is used by anyone from an old country.

It's not exclusive to one country.
