Living at home with your parents
I'm curious for those who have/are living with your parents after highschool...
What do you pay in rent? What kinds of deals do you have made between you and your parents? How long are you aloud to stay living at home? etc... |

i'm very lucky...my parents never have made myself or my brother (he lived here untill he was 25) pay rent. It would be a different story if neither of us worked and just lived off of them. Not the case at all. I hardly even eat their food. I pay for my own satellite/internet in my room but that is it. They have plenty of room to have me living here as long as I want. I moved to Whistler when i was 19 and came home without a question a year later. With places so expensive to rent/buy in Vancouver they have no problem letting me stay here to save up for my own place.

My dad's morgage is paid off so all he expects is for me to pay for what I use... cable, hydro, utilities and I buy and shop for all my own food.
When I was in school full time I didnt have to pay for anything. However now he expects I pay for things, but ansists I stay home to pay off my car asap and save up for a down payment on a house. But he doesnt suport the idea of me using the cheep rent to safe up for DJ equipment and traveling :( |

As soon as I had to start paying rent (which was exactly when I was no longer in high school and had a job), I started looking to move out on my own... or at least with roommates. I figured if I'm paying for my lodgings, I should at least have the freedom to do what I want, and living with the folks tends to hamper that, as it's still THEIR house, so THEIR rules.
(this does not count the year I lived with my mother, as that was practically a reversal of the parent-child role at the time) Rhia: Sounds like your pop wants you to use the extra funds to invest in long-term equity (like a house) rather than short-term funstuffs. It's sound advice of course, but at current housing prices a real challenge.... in the Lower Mainland, anyways. |

When I was younger I hated living at home. I traveled in Aus for a year surving on my own which was a really good experince. After I was very thankfull that I could live at home especialy while going to school. Personaly if I had kids I would have no problem with them staying at home and saving up to travel. I think its one of the most valuable things you can do in your life time. Its worth as much as an education in my mind. However my dad use to be an acountant and isnt the type to think out side the box or did he do much long term traveling when he was young. Its something you can only really do when your young. Anyways its just intresting to see the live style our generation is living in these days and im very lucky that my dad sees that unlike some parents. I dont understand how someone could pay for rent, bills, and food while going to school ALL on their own. Than when they finish there in massive debt. Next step is buy a house... how is this possible with out being married or having some suport from your parents? It's becoming more and more common to see ppl even in their late 20's and 30's to still living at home. |

Don't pay a dime, and there's free booze! Whenever I fuck off on an adventure, my mom ends up being so worried for me that they're practically begging me to come home.
I give up enough of my soul just living in this town; I'm sure they see it that way too. |

I spent precisely 3 weeks on my mom's livingroom floor when I got back from travelling. When I moved into my apartment I was still sleeping on the floor for a while but at least it was MY floor. My independence was worth being broke. |

My arrangement with my dad has been, as with my sister prior n I , If we are going to school or working, we would not have to pay room or board.. except for some reason recently it has changed for me.. *hate my dads gf* arrgh.. I had been giving him 350 every month for the past couple of years. as I was working and basically only having to pay for food for myself and my cell phone..*room n board inc, laundry, family dinners, water, electricity etc.* to add to this I paid either a telephone bill or hydro bill of my dads choice, but since i was laid off and basically living within a limited amount per month .. My dad *with the aid of his bitch* totally screwed up this working relationship with me and my dad therefore having to the point where I hardly was ever home anymore.. to being home a day , her attacking me over erasing the call display* and having me stay at a friends.. *temperarily* *months later*
oh and add to the fact my dad had used my credit card on occasion and never paying it back.. I owe interest or whatever for a visa. i used maybe 6 times since I have had it GRR :P |

My mom lets me live here rent free... when I was in school and when I wasn't. I don't pay for food or anything, but for the most part I don't really eat alot of the food that is kept in the fridge and I am not really around much. IT kind of evens out. I think I can stay as long as I want. I've offered my mom money for rent but she doesn't accept it.
For the most part it's a decent arrangement but sometimes my mom is kind of anal about the little things and stresses over them |
