ya it's the 21st century, but you have to take into account that first nations people are still facing opression; and things really didn't even start getting better for first nations people until the 1970s-80s when they began shutting down residential schools.

First of all... I'd like to see you guys pronounce Kwakiutl.

Second of all... how many of you knew that British Columbia has been OVER 100% claimed by First Nations? Yes, OVER 100%. How you ask? Because the First Nations before us White Folks arrived; their Tribal Ranges had areas of overlap. Kwakiutl had some territory where the Haida or the Salish would also be found. So of course in the modern spirit of wanting things. They all claim the maximum extent of their Ancestors.

Nowhere to go? They're not going to go live amongst the Trees like back in the day. Jesus. They can still hunt, fish and whatever else they want. I've spent a large portion of my life in Northern Vancouver Island and lived right a top of the Kwakiutl Reservation in Alert Bay. They've got plenty of places and some decent communities.

One day the First Nations of British Columbia will have to learn that they cannot stand up to the Government if they are alone fighting on a per-nation basis. If they banded together and pooled their financial resources, like if the Kwakiutl allied with the Nisga'a and the Haida they'd have a chance. But until then, deal with it. Get a job with WFP and make some money. There's Environmental Laws and the Forest Practice Code of BC. Companies are supposed to abide by them.

I'll have to ask you again, did you read the article? This case is clearly not about 'handouts' and 'playing favorites' especially in the gov't, here they seem to be doing the exact opposite. How can you say that First Nations people don't want to better themselves when this is all about protecting a huge chunk of land in a beautiful area that has already suffered too much environmental impact due to logging. How does that show they don't care?

I'm not anti-native or anti-any group of people (except hippies, talk about a drain on society!). I know that everyone has a chance at becomming a success... I know that there are reserves out there that are shitty as fuck.

But the fact of the matter is, the majority of these people do have jobs and are successful people, it's just that percentage of people who feed off the tax payers that piss me off. That is the group of people I am refering to.

I'm actually offended that you people think that I can't see the difference between the two!

Just like not all black men will steal your TV or your woman, some do.

Just like not all white men are in some sort of cushy corporate job, some work in warehouses or they flip your burgers at McD's.

This post just proved mikes point. You are basing your OPINION on weak stereotypes. You have not provided any facts to back up these blanket statements you are making.

I am going to repeat this again for you, because you obviously missed the point. 66% of Natives live on reservations that are in rural areas. Areas that can only be reached once or twice a year. Maybe only by plane. Maybe only by water. These people do not have access to the creature comforts that we are used to such as a bank, doctor or grocery store. Most of these people don't speak english as a first language.

Canada is not a barbaric country. It didn't come in and push the people out who were indigenous to this land, they asked if they could stay and made a compromise to do so. Everyone is a visitor here, and to say that these people shouldn't get something for the gross intrusion is ludacris.

Social Assistance:

Depending on WHY someone is under social assistance, can be a great idea, because it will effect everyone, and not just single out one group of people. However, there are a ton of people who abuse the system.

Unemployment Insurance:

Great if you get laid off and need something to get you by for that first couple of weeks, but if you quit your job and go on this free ticket, I have no respect for you. I understand that times get hard, but it should never take someone more than a month to get a job. If it takes you over a month, lose a bit of pride, work at Starbucks (you know there's enough of them!) and keep hunting while you work. Right now, there is no excuse why people cannot work.

As for those not speaking English... you know, Europeans may have come and "taken" the land from First Nations, but that was several hundred years ago... you want a job? You want a better life? Learn the language. I am so sick of the language barrier as an excuse in this country. There are free services EVERYWHERE to teach someone English... hell, if English is too heard, learn French! We have two nationally used languages... pick one. Keep your heritage, continue to speak your language fluently, but you're in Canada. Learn the language.

As far as I remember, Natives we not allowed to vote until the 60's. Yes, that sucks. But Rosa had to sit at the back of the bus until 1955, and you don't hear African Canadians (broad generalization I know, forgive me) still wanting land and money out of the whole ordeal.

And saying that Natives (First Nations) SHOULD be entitled to something in 2007 when what happened to them happened in the 18th century... it sucks. I'm not going to hold Attila the Hun's family/country responsible for the invasion of Italy 1,960 years ago! Want something more recent? How about the Greek-Italian war 70 years ago? My grandparents were living there so I should be entitled to something then right? We were invaded then too! But I'm not waiting for Greece to pay me severence.

You are damning a whole system setup to help the underpriviledged due to the actions of societal leeches.

First Nations "handouts" are meant to equalize the unfair start their communities had. Things like addiction and poverty are all things that have recipricating factors that interact with each other. You can't just subscribe to the "gung-ho" individualism of liberal thought and ignore the structural factors that manifest societal problems.

btw, you are just taking your own current sucesses as a measuring stick for society. Just because you are doing well for yourself doesn't mean that life can't throw you a curb-ball; have your job outsourced to India. When all your options have been eroded it's nice to know that you are eligible for assistance.
