The syllables range in each one, some are 4, 7, 5 or 4, 7, 4 it's kind of ridiculous.

unless you remember to use a special seasonal word or at least make a reference to nature and write it all as one line it's not a japanese haiku anyways. everyone just harps on the syllable thing cause that's the only part they teach you in high school. american's more versatlle. i can't believe i'm talking about this.

Part of the art form though is the cleverness of it. It's the ability to hold it into the format that is given. I mean, anybody can make wafty nature poems with <20 syllables. It's the haiku form that adds a certain level to it, requires a bit of mind power in order to say what you want within the format.

I understand bending or breaking rules in poetry, makes sense to me. But in my experience you need to know the rules before you can break them, and break them for a reason. The poems on the skytrain don't really have reason except that it seems like the poem-writers are lazy.
