im really trying to quit though - i recently realised how dependant i am on caffeine and its kinda scary... if your a regular coffee drinker try going a day without it and see how you feel.. for me the withdrawal symptoms were awful.... made me believe that the coffee isn’t really doing anything to make me more awake or alert. its just fulfilling the dependency.

Coffee 'no boost in the morning'

That morning latte or expresso may not be the pick-me-up people think it is, a study has revealed.

University of Bristol researchers say the caffeine eases withdrawal symptoms which build up overnight, but does not make people more alert than normal.

The work, presented to the British Nutrition Foundation conference, showed only people who have avoided coffee for a while will get a buzz from caffeine.

But the British Coffee Association said regular drinkers did feel more alert.

Those who swear by their morning caffeine fix say it wakes them up, and if they missed out they would feel sluggish and unable to get on with their day.

But the Bristol researchers, who carried out a review of previous studies into the effects of caffeine, say all the drink does is counteract the mild caffeine withdrawal symptoms people are experiencing because they have gone without the stimulant overnight.

And those who drink a caffeinated drink first thing are no more alert than those who never consume one.

'Back to normal'

Professor Peter Rogers, a biological psychologist who led the research, told the BBC: "We do feel a boost from caffeine in the morning, but that's probably due to a reversal of the withdrawal symptoms.

"That alertness you feel is you getting back to normal, rather than to an above normal level.

"That morning boost is what people think is useful about caffeine, but if that doesn't happen, maybe it's not that useful after all."

Professor Rogers said caffeine did have some benefits, such as preventing cognitive decline in the elderly.

But he said it was usually be best to opt for decaffeinated drinks - although the odd coffee could help.

"If you're not a regular consumer, you might get something out of one or two drinks. But once you're a regular consumer, you're in a cycle of withdrawal reversal."

Zoe Wheeldon, of the British Coffee Association, said the research was interesting.

But she added: "There are two sides to the debate and a wealth of scientific evidence suggests that moderate coffee consumption of four to five cups per day is perfectly safe for the general population and does have a beneficial effect on alertness and performance even in regular coffee drinkers."

I'm off the coffee pretty much, I'll have an americano if I'm really in need of caffiene (I find it makes the coffeeism less sketchy b/c there's more water in it)

now I'm all about the tea, earl grey 4 life!

I used to be a 2-4 cup per day person, having free coffee at work doesn't help.

yeah but tea has the calmatives to go along with the caffeine. doesn't hit you in that strung out on coffee way. more of a nice glow, awake feeling to it.

I used to work at Blenz and Starbucks and my coffee addiction was at its peak during those times.

I'd basically get to work and slam a quad toffee nut/hazelnut americano half full in a small cup (4 shots of espresso) and sip on straight double espresso's throughout my shift.
I'd also drink coffee and soy latte's throughout the day so I'd consume roughly 8-12 coffee beverages a day.

At one point I started getting muscle spasms and I was fidgety and tweaking all the time so I went to the doctor and he basically told me to stop self medicating with caffeine.

Now I drink 2 coffees a day

that's not true actually, but i've heard people say it before. even tea's with the highest caffeine content only have about a third that of coffee.

At my peak i would drink about 3-5 cups of coffee, 2-4 energy drinks and 4-12 cups of tea a day. Now i drink coffee very sparingly maybe 1 cup max on days i'm at school for a long time. Usually i drink about 2-5 cups of tea a day, but not everyday.

yeah, if you don't eat or drink water before or after, it feels like shit. ultimately not worth it if you have to "prepare" for drinking coffee. I'm trying to stop my 1 cup a day habit.
