Myths and mistakes about Richmond that have cropped up in this thread and need to be dispelled:

First and foremost, Richmond is NOT better than Vancouver.

Richmond is also not "like Surrey" in any way shape or form. It's more like the polar opposite. Think of Richmond as Flanders to Surrey's Snake. Except maybe it's the Azn Flanders that would've been present at the Flanders' Family BBQ.

Richmond may have the occasional hidden restaurant gem, but there's 1 for every 10 bland-fests. As someone who's been working in the area for the past year, and never packs a lunch, I speak from experience. You can find more deliciousness on Davie St. alone than you can on that whole island.

Whether Richmond's shopping is "convenient" is debateable. I suppose there's a couple of big malls next to each other, but you can only get there by bus (until we finish building this damn RAV line). What shopping there is beyond that is beyond me.

If you have to throw out "lots of parking" as a supporting argument for a city... well you see where I'm going with this.

As delicious and cheap as the eats may be, Yaohan food court is MSG central.

I agree that the airport is a good thing.. a couple of people name-checked Garry Point without mentioning Steveston as a whole. Steveston is my favorite part of Richmond by a long shot. It's got a lot of nostalgia for me.. I took boxing lessons at the community center, drank booze and smoked pot for pretty much the first few times out at Garry Point.. various other antics and memories..

I went back there a couple of weeks ago and was thrilled to find that, apart from a few clusters of condos, not too much has changed.

OK it looks like I have a soft spot for my home city after all.

That's okay, judging by the first post Richmond is about 6 years behind the internet so I think it's understandable.

richmond is great for barhopping if you've lived here for a while. there's a lot of good things here. but to say richmond > vancouver is ridiculous.

Dave, did you go to hs in Richmond?

And of COURSE Steveston as a whole is fantastic, and one of the best parts of Richmond. I was just naming a few specifics.

Some of these comments make me wonder if we're talking about a different Richmond.. like the one in Virginia or something.

Nev I went to Burnett (Burnout!) from 8-10, Richmond High from 11-12

i bet the 24 hour places r owned by Vietnamese.

Pho 99 Vietnamese Noodle House near Denbigh Ave, Kingway and near the car sales lot near Buller, is one such spot.

My guess is 99 is a lucky word in Vietnamese.

Richmond also has BC's #1 taser-happy RCMP, followed by Chillwack and Coquitlam.

VPD cops are less likely to use a taser; heck, they didn't have time to read the riot act back in 1994. Effen drunktards ruin losing for everyone.

After watching 1040 on my sports channel yesterday, I don't think it was the drunktards -- it was the leftie radicals who had postered all the lamp posts with some direct action in the months preceding.

Regarding Richmond, it like West Van and the better parts of North Van - east North Vancouver reminds me too much of Port Coquitlam and we know how bad it is getting there and in Coquitlam proper - in that decent, hardworking middle-class people can work for usually rich people.

I don't think much has changed from colonial days on that respect, given that the rich are post-modern versions of aristocrats with more blue blood and silver spoons in Richmond all showing how inept they are at actually working hard.

Meanwhile, the blue-collars are trying to be more productive than their peasant ancestors were, who basically were trying to sell snake oil or farm or hunt or fish.

I am not gonna mention the poor of Richmond except to say that most of them are welfare moms who need less generalization and a pay raise soon.

Are there any hair salon schools in Richmond? Or did their funding get cut so much everyone has to go to the Surrey one at the old Kwantlen College campus on 140th St?

there are more high class prostitutes in richmond than in the whole of surrey.

it's just that the ones who accept gifts other than money aren't thought of as prostitutes.

it is debateable if women who accept the ultimate gift of childbirth from deadbeat dads are, either, but their kids' dads are worse than Johns cos at least johns pay before they sit at the table.
