maybe because the olympics are in VANCOUVER and what represents vancouver and the west coasts does not necessarily represent the rest of canada.

I think that there should have been representation of BC as well as Canada. The maple leaf is Canadian, no matter what province you live in. I also think choosing "mythical creatures" was foolish. My boyfriend (from Florida) asked me "What the hell is a sea-bear? That's not real, is it?" People from all around the world who don't know better are going to assume that the sea-bear, sasquatch and thunderbird are REAL animals. Augh. I don't understand why they didn't just go with the spirit bear (REAL), orca whale (ALSO REAL), etc.

The best mascot is Muk Muk and he's not even a actual mascot!

Not really. Every province is unique and has things that define it versus other provinces, however, Canada is Canada. You could say that for every province/state/territory, etc. in every country!

In fact, each city is very unique - Vancouver's Asian and Native communities are represented by these mascots, but what about the REST of Vancouver? What about Whistler where all of the snow events will take place? I think that they focused far too much on two groups and didn't look at the big picture of Vancouver. Answer: Because it was designed by committee. And a committee would rather have a new design that is unique and different from all other mascots.

Orcas are already the Vancouver Canucks logo, so it seems pretty obvious they wouldn't want to go with that.

Spirit Bears are already part of the downtown exhibit, so they might run into legality issues if they try to re-appropriate the character for a multi-billion dollar venture such as the olympics. And it'd probably cost more to license an already-known character than to just have a new one designed for the olympics.

Committees don't really tap that much into the hearts & minds of the people of the city. They're concerned about two things:
1) Is it marketable?
2) Are we gonna get sued over it?
