PS3 Plays .avi

so I know this is old news but I just noticed that my PS3 plays .avi files! honestly I'm a little surprised that Sony is so willing to help me pirate their content but hey who am I to complain.

they had to implement divx as 360 got this in the winter update. i actually think sony announced it first but took forever in coming through.

set up a media server. its quick and easy, if you're using a PC, get TVersity.

Not surprising. Most of their DVD players these days have xvid and divx codecs in them. Is it really such a pain to install them on something so computer-based as a console?

its not a pain, but i believe they have to get it licensed from divx.

a lot of 'good' hi def content are .mkv files so good luck finding decent hi def content with the xvid codec.

edit i suppose you could download HR content or standard LR HDTV rips but they aren't true 'HD', they've just been ripped from a HD source.

I don't think it's so much the high-def that he's pleased about with xvid but the fact that he can watch all his 700mb downloaded/ripped movies on TV now.

Anybody have any idea on how HDrips to xvid look if you give them a super-high bitrate? I'd kinda be interested if you compressed a Blu-Ray movie to fit on a DVD with xvid to see how pretty it ends up. Be a good test of the scalability of the codec right there....

the xvid codec works wonder if the resolution is small hence why the codec is very popular. you get half decent quality rips with a low bitrate.

encoding a HDRip to xvid would kind of be pointless even thought it sounds like it'd be sweet. if you want true quality rips id suggest downloading a x264 release. they handle larger resolutions much better then xvid does.

^desktop/laptop + vga out + optical out/3.5mm -> RCA

360 streams 1080p wmv with 5.1
x264/mkv are the best for hd content though

If it did look good im sure id see a lot more scene releases with HDRip and XviD in the same directory name.

Again, this is theorizing. I'm sure if ogg vorbis really was a much better compression algorithm than mp3 or wmv we'd be seeing a lot more of those, too, right? Sadly, this is not the case as most everybody just uses MP3

I dunno. Most scene releases you're looking at people putting them so they can fit on 1 or 2 CDs, you're NEVER going to get hd-level quality at that rate.

If you want hd-level quality download a x264 hd-dvd release or a wmv blu-ray release. The resolution will be hd and the quality will be hd as well. Don't ponder why rippers dont rip hd movies to xvid because if you want hd then you shouldn't be looking at xvid as they don't go together.
