Buying a bike.

Hey,

So gas prices are rising, Insurance seems to be as well, and apparently chicks like dudes who ride bikes? Anyways I'm interested in reducing my impact on the environment as well. I drive to work which is about 5-10 kms away from my home. I drive home 9-12 hours later. Only to return later for a workout. Its a dumb idea and I'm sure you have already worked out a better plan for me in your head. I want a bike. I have no idea where to start. I want something strictly for riding to work but I could see it becoming a hobby. I don't want to spend over 400$ Costco sells hybrid bikes that are for all around travel trails or city and they are about 300 bucks however I can buy a used touring bike for around the same price. What do you think?

well do you want a 'hybrid' bike or are you fine with a road bike? Craigslist it either way, find something cheap, get it tuned up, and you'll be just as good.

Yeah I know where I can buy bikes. I'm wondering what type, brand, etc is good for what I want do with it.

Get a hold of Mr. Lenny Ford, he's got a couple bikes and could point you in the right direction.

I've got a 24" framed bmx which suits my needs well for downtown life, it's a larger frame than a standard bmx which I find gives a bit more of a comfortable ride.

if you're going the scenester single speed/fixed gear route i have an old frame and almost a complete bike in parts i could sell you mega cheap

any bike, even if it's sized seemingly right by stand-over height or frame size, get on it and see how it feels. Different frames will have different top tube lengths, so some frames will have you more 'stretched out' than others.

(i just picked up a mtn bike through craigs and so i had to brush up on how to buy a bike :p)

scenesters are taking an old road bike and converting it into a single speed or a fixed gear bike
a fixed gear is hard as hell to ride
also, apparently, you're a pussy if you put on breaks

i dont see the appeal but a lot of people swear by it, they make great commuter bikes

Oh I know what those are now. Yeah its not all fun and games here in surrey. It wouldnt take long for someone to beat my ass. I was on training wheels for so long I don't want to experience that kind of life again.
