my parents put that shit on my thumb too, i freaked the fuck out, according to my parents i thought my thumb was "broken" and was very very distressed. it was almost 20 years ago so the taste isn't too clear of a memory and i can't say for sure but i think that stuff was like a nail polish finish.
your parents may have used a different product though.

dmso doesn't really have a bad taste i don't think, although i haven't actually made a point of eating it there has been a couple times that it's splashed or whatever and got in my mouth and it's not horrible.
it's when it soaks into your blood stream through your skin that you get this nasty kind of garlic taste and you stink about the same as what you're tasting.
some people don't mind it.
others loathe it.

it's a pretty good prank since DMSO is odorless, colorless and has no texture or film (if it's liquid DMSO) for the most part.

just don't get anything like cayanne pepper on your hands before you get dmso on them, it's just not cool.
